I'm thinking about tricking out .308 savage when I get back from Afghany land and have some money to play with so tell me what you guys think about this. are there better option out there for the routes I'm going? and as far as what I plan on using it for, up to 1000 yards target mainly, with some hunting thrown in as well.

send the action off to Hart barrels to have the heaviest barrel put on with muzzle brake, cryoed and action all trued up.

McMillan A5 stock, with any bedding or stuff done to make that good to go.

Leupold Mark 4 in 6.5-20 power.

and one of those 20 MOA bases.

currently the rifle is bone stock and I feel like I'm not the detrimental part in acheiving good accuracy, its probably about a 1.5 MOA rifle right now, I figure with these improvements it'll shoot better than I can, which is what I want, I always want my equipment to be better than me so if anything goes wrong I can only blame myself.

I know there are probably better routes to go like just get an all new gun, but i feel like this gun has some potential and I want to turn it from a grand am into a viper.

Ya got the right idea, although I question using your Savage as the basis for your LR rifle. I think you will find many more after-market precision parts/accessories available for the Remington and Winchester platform, as well as more of the top gunsmiths working on them. Stay safe.

Your weak point is going to be your trigger. Personally, I'd do as you described, only I'd spring a few bucks more, and start with a custom "varmint" target action... Tell the guys to give Stiller a call...

You probably also don't need a muzzle break - Won't help accuracy, and just makes a relatively light recoil rifle obnoxious.

Perhaps I'm just holding the rifle wrong, but whenever I fire it from the prone it hurts like crazy, maybe I'm just all skin and bones, blast and concussion I can deal with though. also the stock barely has a pad on it so that might also be a contibuting factor.

I actually really like the trigger on the gun, crisp no creep or takeup, and I've adjusted it down so it breaks right around 3 pounds by my guess,

bogie is correct, a muzzle break on a .308 is unnecessary. You will add quite a bit of weight to your stick with an A5 stock, and nothing reduces recoil like a little added weight.

I'd starting with a Remington rather than a Savage though.

Hey everyone, I know this is an old thread but I wanted to resurect it to give an update. I have some good news, when I was home on leave most of my rifle had been delivered so I was able to start the assembly,

I ended up getting he Badger Ordnance rings and inclined base, Hart HV undersized barrel in a 1/12 twist if I remember correctly, didn't bother with the cryo treatment or muzzel threading. Got the Leupold mark 4 in 6.5 to 20.

turns out my McMillan A5 stock in black with one or two shades of gray marbled in arived at my parent's house the other day so I'm having them put the action in the stock and take some pics of it for me and email them to me, so when I get them I'll make sure to post them up here for all to drool over

Also reading over my origonal thread, funny how I ended up in Iraq instead of Afghanistan, oh well, moneys the same either way.

I have a Savage action in .308 with a Hart barrel in an A5 stock, the only difference is that I have a Nightforce 5.5x22 NXS scope. It shoots Lapua 155 gr. Scenars into little holes. You were right to use the Savage action, the play in the interchangeable bolt head gives it an edge over Remington or Winchester, I have both. I ended up painting my stock, the original finish was too shiny for my taste. Enjoy your new toy and thank you for your service.

And if you ever wanted to shoot an NRA match, they don't allow muzzle brakes.

My Savage .308 F-T/R class rifle has a Pac Nor barrel heavier than Savage Varmint, 30mm tube scope, bipod... and lead shot in epoxy under the action, under the barrel, and under the butt plate. Still less than the maximum 18 lbs. And I still wear a Rand shoulder pad
