Rifle choice and economics

I could get a CMP receiver (newly refinished, and all for $150!) and have a Garand built. It looks reasonably inexpensive, and I'd have a nice new gun. I'm thinking 30-06 might be better if I go for a long-barreled target gun using heavier bullets for long range shooting; otherwise, .308 if I opt for an 18" barrel. I do prefer the idea of an M14 clone to a Garand.

nobody special,

Scratch the idea that you can go with heavy bullets in a Garand. The Garand is port pressure sensitive, and you really can't do much better with it ballistically than you can with a M14 clone. Now, if you are talking about a bolt gun, THEN you can load the .30-06 up to levels well above a .308.

I am, by far, no expert on CA firearms rules, but I believe that 308 Saiga would not work in CA. I believe the AK reciever is specifically banned.

That said, I LOVE saiga 308's.

JWarren, USSR: Thanks. That leads me back to the M14 clone.

Can anyone answer the .308 vs. 7.62 ammunition question?
