I have a tradition of getting my children a gun.... (AK-like) made the year they are born.... and I'm not completly sure what to get my son born this year.... I have about $1,000 to spend.. any thoughts or suggestions?.... I don't want to get him something I've already got... but something he can use growing up and will enjoy shooting the rest of his life as it will be engraved... so it will His gun from me.... I've been leaning towards Sig 556 but not 100% sure... I've looked hard at Arsenals and they look cool but I don't like their limited mags... thanks, Johnny K Sr

Johnny what seems to give him the ooooh ahhhh factor?? When/if he has accompanied you and saw other firearms; what has he been drawn to?? The light in one's eyes when presented with such a gift....priceless.....When growing up long long ago a semi-auto anything was my dream and I doubt that has changed for the newer generation......if anything only gotten worse.....

Well, I'd start by getting them a bolt action instead. A 223 or a 17HMR. With that budget, you could get good mileage.

folks need to read the OP's post a little better...

His son was born this year, meaning he's a baby.

@johnny k, I would get him a 'real' mak-90 myself... but that's just me. There are sooo many to choose from, PSL's are pretty cool, so are FN/Fal's... I like more firepower myself, something a little more meaty than a .223 or 7.62x39, nothing at all wrong with those rounds though.

... and after all that, I didn't read it well enough either :scrutiny:

made this year huh? looks like you can't get anything that's a "classic" then. keep us informed on what you find!

A vote for a single shot bolt .22 to start a child out with basics and simplicity. Personally don't see a 5 or 6 yr old ripping off a mag from a ak.

Cooper can bulid you a nice .22 with whatever you desire and most likely a serial number with your child's birthday. It will be over $1K and will probably take a year to complete but will be very personal and an investment.

Yep not enough coffee or I slept on my head/brain wrongly last night....thanks for pointing out my inadequacies today and being politically correct and not calling me a ding dong!!..... probably deserved.....maybe I should not drive someplace today??!!!

funny is, i did exactly the same thing after scolding someone else... so who's the bigger ding dong :D

Personally I went the classic route, my sons first rifle was a Winchester. I found a nice vintage Model 63 bolt action youth model, a little stock refinish and for right around $150 he has a classic rifle that he can pass down to his children. I figure it not only teaches him about guns but also about investing wisely as a Winchester will always go up in value.

I would consider a SOCOM. I'm not sure if you have one already, but they are awesome guns. I want one.

I would talk to a builder with a good reputation that specializes in AK's. Jim Fuller comes to mind.
Thats a great idea, BTW. Wish I would have come up with it.

Centerfire military pattern rifle sounds more like you're wanting to buy a gun for yourself and use the kid as justification. ;)

Perhaps consider a 10/22 or AR-style .22 with irons and a red dot scope. Train him on the basics with that, and when he's old enough, start taking him to some Steel Challenge matches.

id get a .22lr or something simular that is fun to shoot and doesnt cost too much in ammo. Id get my child something that i can teach him early on with gun safty but can be fun and not intimidating.

for the longest time when growing up i was awesome with my single shot bolt action that i could kill rabbit, squirrel, partridge, etc with it from 100yrds. I was intimidated with other guns as my dad had a 30-06 I did use a 20g single shot shot gun as well and that was as big as I used for many many years as all the other guns wer high caliber.

id get a single shot .22lr and then after training him id move him up to a more fun .22lr that has a large clip(s) then move him up to a pistol cal rifle. to get used to louder bang and kick.

but if you already have that Id get a lever action 30/30 win or a 243 bolt action that has all the bells and whistles. Usually the more eye appealing the more they want it. Even if it doesn't take down something lol

I would get a good quality AR, or a very nice bolt rifle in say 243, or 7mm08.

If i'm understanding the op correctly he is wanting something the kid can use his entire life, not specifically his "first gun", but a gift from his old man that he can hunt, or enjoy shooting many years into his life..

I have 300 magnums, 7mm RM and I almost always leave for deer camp with two 243 win rifles, they kill 'em dead and I handload premiums copper bullets for 'em I'm an adult with children of my own, and I still prefer to hunt with a stereo typical "youth" caliber..

so my vote would be a nice bolt action with premium wood in a 243, sako, weatherby, high end savage..

A nice 22 is a rifle you have all you life. Wood and steel, family heirloom he may be able to pass down. The AK's and AR's may become passe or restricted at some future point, but a good 22 will have the longest life in the regulatory environment.

I strongly recommend something that is quite possibly not going to be around in 12-18 years when he'll actually be receiving the rifle. My personal tradition is a .22 at age 7, and hunting rifle ~12.

At the $1000 range I'd go for something like a converted saiga .308 with a bunch of 25 round magazines would still come in well under $1000. You could even add in a POSP scope with mount for that price. And .308 saigas are fun to shoot, reasonably accurate, and reliable as heck.

I LOVE the AK platform and there are many choices... I do plan on getting my kids a 10/22 to start out on... but that's nothing to pass down and personalize... but I'm wanting something made this year I can pass down... I bought my daugher an Olympic Arms K30r... an AR that shoots 7.62 x 39 and just looks BADASS... and spent around $900 for it... yes, I do enjoy shooting it... and I'm sure she will as well.. I don't think that an AR or AK will ever go out of style... AK platform is over 60 years old and I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon... a PSL would be cool but I haven't been able to find one made in 2011 but that's not an everyday shooter... any ideas???... my default so far is Sig 556 as it has the AK bolt but doesn't have the best reviews.... I'm just looking for other suggestions I may have missed... they do look cool in the Patrol Swat version with quad rails... but my Golani with Quad rails looks very similar to Sig 556... thanks for input...

Could get him a new Saiga and, when he's older, help him convert it. Something you can do together, that'd be cool.
