I am planning to go long distance dirt biking in bear country near and in Montana.
The reading from the Forest Service suggests there it is more likely that injury occurs with firearms rather than spray.

Most all of us would still opt for using a rifle during a charge (discerning between a false charge or not is another topic). The usual prediction is of wind causing the shooter to get the dinner spice in their eyes.

Just the same, I have a very strong ethic to live and let live unless my life is threatened. There is little tree huger in me, but Yogi does serve some very valuable services in the forest ecosystem, and I don't want the hassle of packing him out.

Has anyone seen rifle mounted bear spray? I do trust I would have one second to make the choice before launching a 500 grain. A dispensing system which would allow a concurrent rifle aim seems a good idea to me.

I would only start to worry when the engine is off, and we all know engines.

I don't want to be thinking which weapon to deploy with that one second. I say put the spray on your belt and off of the rifle.

Only thing I could think to mount on a rifle in bear country to help stop a bear attack would be a bayonet. Maybe the pigsticker shoved out in front of you might do some good, especially if you find an sword type from WWI. :)

You are all missing the most logical answer. There is nothing in this world that cannot be attached to an AR. Come on people:neener:

I think the prefered method is to travel with someone who is not quite as fast on their feet as you are. But as a second option a can of spray in a very secure location on your body is almost as good.
All kidding aside if the wind is in your favor spray away if not be sure to have a good sharp skinning knife handy in case you need it.
Have fun

About bayonnets well...a MosinNagant 91/30 is 48" OAL and mounts an 18"spike bayonet........:scrutiny:

I suspect if you get close enough to bayonnet a bear, then the bear is close enough rip your face off. :uhoh:

I`d say listen to Tuco Benedicto Pacifico ..etc.. Ramirez`s pearl of wisdom- "When you gotta shoot,SHOOT! Don`t spray".

I would carry them and use them seperately myself..

Should a sudden wind pick up as you use the spray, you could become temporarily blinded with your gun ready to go--which could be hazardous to other people in the vicinity.

there was some northern native american fella, can't recall much about him only that he was mentioned and interviewed in a couple documentaries in the 70's or 80's... anyhow, he used to hunt grizzly bear with a single shot .22 short. He would instigate the bear into standing up on 2 feet, then shoot it in the eye...

so, that said, get a derringer and be done with it :what:

seriously though, are you going to carry bear spray AND a rifle on a dirt bike? seems like overkill to me, understandable if you're spending a few days camping but I'd bet the motorcycle will scare the bejeesus out of any bear in the immediate area... What are the laws about a handgun where you are at?

All in all, the combination deal sounds like a really bad idea. The rifle could easily be in too awkward a mode of carry to be accessible uber quickly. Strong pepper spray in a belt holster would be much, much more accessible.

And guys, while it is indeed tempting, save the snark.

Could you possibly put one of the smaller mace canisters in a 1" scope ring and find a way to mount it sideways on the rifle?? I have no idea as to how you would get it to mount sideways though.

I think I have heard it all now. If you can't shoot well enough to get out of a scrape with a bear with the ammo in the rifle, you seriously need to think about some practice time. You live in the city don't you............chris3

While klover may have thick skin, some of our responses aren't exactly high road.

A pepper slug does sound like an interesting option. In general, though, keep pepper and firearms separate.
