Please indicate which rifle you'd prefer. All will be synthetic and stainless, most likely in 300 Win Mag. If you choose other, please indicate which other choice. All of these are in the $400 to $900 range. Thanks.

I've never personally fired any of these weapons and I'm only going off of what people say on the internet (so it must be true, right?). I voted Savage because I hear quite a bit that they're inexpensive and ready to go straight out of the box.

I have never been let down by Remington 700s. I had been told by several people to try the savage, and I did, and frankly, I couldn't see what the big deal was.

I recommend find used versions of both at a pawn shop, (along with any other comparable ones you can think of,) run them through the paces, and if you don't like any or all of them, you can sell them back with less fear of loss. (Although I have never felt I despised a rifle so much I needed to trade it back.)

The advantage you have with these rifles in this setup is that most people who buy them bite off more than they can chew, never really break them in, and their wives make them get rid of them when they get bored with them.

I voted "other". I'd get a Remington Model 700 SPS stainless over any of them. First off, I like Remington 700's. That's all I really ever shoot for bolt guns anymore. Second, the SPS is basically the same gun as the XCR but with fewer frills. I'd put the $ you save on the SPS over the XCR into high quality rings and glass. I guarantee you won't see any difference in group size between the XCR and the SPS, and I'd rather put more $ into the scope. That's just me. They will all probably serve you just fine.

If you're going to shoot the thing in the field, the Weatherby comb is a godsend on a heavy-recoiling rifle. The stock geometry points well and sits still for me offhand or seated. Real comfortable, and easy to hit something far away.

The Vanguard's price is an added bonus. It's very similar to the Remington's action (even takes the same scope bases), with a good accuracy guarantee. It's not a light gun, but on a .300 WM, really light is not an asset.

well as my handle might imply "i really like sako's " but honestly you can get the same quality machineing and barrels buying a tikka for half the price.

I handled the Tikka in Cabelas today, and I really liked it. Very smooth action, felt really nice. But I'm not sure I liked the groved receiver. It doesn't seem like rings would be as secure as with some Redfiled dovetail mounts. Am I wrong?

Thanks to everyone for the input. It's come down to the Savage or the Remington SPS. The Savage is about $200 cheaper.

That Accu-Trigger is awfully nice if you like the way it works. Makes the gun an even better deal. Hard to say no to a great gun for a great price.

I'm not sure what Remington is doing with their triggers. They used to make trouble for you if you adjusted them and had a warranty issue. I don't know if this has changed any. Either way, I think the Accu-Trigger is a LOT better than an SPS trigger without 'smithing.

Weatherby, with a nearly identical action to Remington, tells you how in the owner's manual, and expects you to adjust the trigger to your preference.

Best bang for you buck accuracy wise: Savage

Best gun for accuracy and fit/finish: Browning A-Bolt

Most Weather Resistant: Remington XCR

Personally if money is tight go for the Savage, otherwise I'd probably choose either the Browning or Remington XCR.
