I do not like Hawkeye rifles at all. I would go with a Mark II or a Savage before a Hawkeye. Since Mark IIs are generally higher than your stated price range so the Savage may fill the bill nicely.

In stainless the Hawkeye is less expesive than the Savage and a much better choice in my opinion. Since they already come with rings it is an even better value.

A lot of people on the net rave about the Savage rifles accuracy, but I have never found one that was anything special. Decent shooters, but not any better than any other production rifle.

Shot my 308 Ruger MK-2, stainless with factory synthetic stock at the range yesterday. My worst 100 yard group was still under 1" and my best was 7/16". At 200 yards my groups were between 1 1/8" to 1 1/2". I've tried 3 different Savages, and have not found a sporter weight rifle that would come close to that. Their heavy barreled varmit and tactical rifles may beat it, but that is good enough for me, especially in a much lighter gun.

I have seen Remington 700's that are not in the Remington catalog at Walmart for a good price. Very nice.

Remington 700 Mountina LSS does not come in 308-according to the link provided.

The M77 Hawkeye All Weather looks very nice.

I love stainless rifles with a black stock.

Can't go wrong with a Ruger.

I used to have an old Ruger Model 77 MarkII in .308 caliber; it was a nice rifle, accurate and reliable. I once dropped a hog with it at a measured 165 yards (not far for many of you guys, but the farthest shot I have ever made) using a 4X Leupold scope.

It was a nice rifle, and after my good experiences with it, I would be prone to buying another Ruger bolt action rifle.
