Well, I'm a long time handgun shooter who has, in the last year or so, developed an interest in rifle shooting. I have purchased a couple, mounted scopes, and (more or less) sighted them in on the local 25 yd. indoor range. Now I need some place to practice.

I've heard of a couple of ranges in this area, especially "Tusco". Does anyone have any information they're willing to share? Do I need a sponsor? How do I arrange a visit? What is the cost? Yadda, yadda.

One of the rifles I purchased was a Remington 700 VLS in .223 on which I have mounted a Leupold 6.5 x 20. I'm most anxious to see how this combo can perform.

I appreciate your help.

Just sent in my membership renewal Thurs, $47.70. I don't recall what the initiation fee was but IIRC, the total for the first payment (1st year + initial fee) was just under $100. Can't remember about signatures, 3gun should be able to fill you in. I've also been trying to get into Canton-McKinley RPC near North Canton. Need two signatures though and don't know anyone in the club. There is a public range east of Cleveland in Trumbull County (Grand River). Need a pass bought at sporting goods stores, gun shops, etc. to get on. There is a newer ODNR range west of Coshocton I haven't checked out yet. Woodbury

ODNR Ranges

There is also A&A off of 422 but haven't been there in awhile. Flat rates use to be $8/hr.

3 gun reporting. Lots of shoots going on around Ohio. Tusco has a shoot coming up on 4/27. Ashland had a tac. rifle shoot today. Briar Rabbit has a Varmint Silhouette shoot once or twice a month. Many of the clubs that host HP matches will let you shoot "off the book" for the experience if they have an open spot.

You can follow the links in my SIG line for an idea of when and where you can find up coming shoots. See you on the line.

Well, just got back from the ODNR range at Grand River (no shooting, just a recon).

Range closes at 5 PM
Closed Mon, Tue, New Years, Easter, Memorial, 4th, Thanks, Christmas Eve and Day, January, February
25 yds, 50 yds, 100 yds outdoors
20 benches per range (10 covered, 10 open)
Port-A-Potty
Sign In/Out
One day pass - $3
One year pass - $25
One year pass with hunting or fishing license - $10
Passes can be obtained anywhere licenses are purchased - NOT SOLD AT RANGE
Range (ODNR) officer on site
No targets between benches and berms
Re-usable wire target stands available at no cost for use (ODNR property)
Very strict safety rules
Full auto not allowed but maximum three round quick fire allowed.

The range is very well kept, I was impressed. Got my pass on the way home at Gander Mountain. (Also examined a SIG Trailside Competition and a Beretta NEOS. Was very surprised at how well the NEOS felt in my hand.)

The biggest safety rule to remember is that when a cease-fire is called (to everyone's aggreement), actions must be opened, magazines (if present) ejected, and all shooters must stand behind a (at the moment well worn) yellow line about 3 feet behind the benches. Corssing the line while folks are down range will bring on a warning. Two warnings (for line infraction or safety issue) and you are out.

places to shoot

i used to live in sugarcreek and went to the strip mine pits anytime.theyre out dundee way.county sheriff said it was no problem and shoot all you like, this was 10 years ago, things may have changed..also had a few mennonite and amish friends that had acrage bigtime that didnt mind me going over there and shooting-especially if i mentioned the word groundhogs.an other option is get to know the local pd and find out where they go.a few i knew also had some property set up for practice and didnt mind competing from time to time.these are the free methods.
