Folks, need some suggestions here...

Just got back from my first PPC / Combat Pistol and Defensive Shotgun Shoot and it was a lot of fun. The club I belong to is doing another shoot in a month but it will be with Rifles instead of Shotguns at 200 and 100 yards.

The local whitetail regs have kept my rifle purchases slim over the years (shotgun only) and as of now the only true rifle I own is a Yugo Mauser 24/47 that is still in the original configuration.

I'm planning to participate in this shoot and future shoots so I need to select a good rifle for target and possibly benchrest shooting. It won't be used for deer or game so that doesn't figure into this selection.

I am also a resident of the fair state of New York :barf: so my choices must fall into the old rules of the 'assault' weapon ban of the previous years.

The last factors would be the following:
- Ammo, nothing that is handload only or will become hard to locate due to it's unique nature.
- Scopes/Iron Sights, can use either without severe modifications to the rifle (ie drill/tap a Garand is a no no).
- Out of the box function, nothing I need to buy then add barrels/bushings/triggers etc to make it really accurate.
- Action, I prefer semi-auto but have nothing against bolt action.

So what would you suggest? I'm open to new / used / surplus / etc and curious to hear suggestions so I can do more research. I'm aware of many possible rifles but I know someone will suggest something here I haven't even thought of yet.

RNB65 I'd let you laugh if I showed up at the range with this for MY shooting, but I plan to get one if I have a daughter!

A savage .308 with iron sights,

Plenty of aftermarket accessories, accurate, there is also plenty of .308 ammo out there so you can find something that shoots good. And best of all its easy on the wallet.

My $.02

S4L...That rifle is on my short list for sure. Got to take a test drive and was impressed. I think the OP however was looking for a semi-auto. The M1A Scout in my view, would be perfect. Robust, yet compact, powerful, accurate and reliable. Would be home shooting long ranges, or on a tactical carbine course. Aftermarket is solid and so is the gun....

No no, not ONLY semi-auto, I'm open to about anything... just like the ease of the semi's

A .308 savage is one that is already up there on my list, along with the M1A... but now how about something other than the M1A? :)

Toss a Mojo peep sight (no drilling, tapping, etc; it just replaces the rear sight leaf and uses existing hardware) on your Mauser for a few bucks to see if you want to really really get into the rifle shooting - a recoil pad slipped over the butt of the rifle and/or on your shoulder will increase your comfort level with that old war horse. After you shoot a few matches you'll know better what you want in the new rifle.

Remington 700, it's bolt-action, and comes in many different calibers. and you should be able to find one at a pretty reasonable price.

ugaarguy that mojo peep sight looks decent... just need to see if one of their models will fit the Yugo 24/47, just emailed them... be interesting to see what they say.

The Deer Hunter i've heard about them M14's but I might have to look at the M1A first, since it was mentioned on post #2 ;)

You could get a savage bolt action w/scope for around $400. They come in pretty much every popular calibre I believe.

A CZ 527 (they also make a carbine 527) in .223 or 7.62x39. Cheap ammo and good rifles. Can get them with iron sights.

Remington 700 SPS.

SAIGA?

M1 Carbine allowed?

Marlin 336 was already mentioned but I second that notion. Good rifle.

I've been looking at and lusting over a (Finnish made) Tikka T3 that comes in (sans scope) at around $500. I haven't found anyone that says a bad thing about them. Get a .223 or a .308 with a decent scope (Nikon 3-9x40 for $150) and you're golden. No sights though.
