Folks, need some suggestions here...
Just got back from my first PPC / Combat Pistol and Defensive Shotgun Shoot and it was a lot of fun. The club I belong to is doing another shoot in a month but it will be with Rifles instead of Shotguns at 200 and 100 yards.
The local whitetail regs have kept my rifle purchases slim over the years (shotgun only) and as of now the only true rifle I own is a Yugo Mauser 24/47 that is still in the original configuration.
I'm planning to participate in this shoot and future shoots so I need to select a good rifle for target and possibly benchrest shooting. It won't be used for deer or game so that doesn't figure into this selection.
I am also a resident of the fair state of New York
so my choices must fall into the old rules of the 'assault' weapon ban of the previous years.
The last factors would be the following:
- Ammo, nothing that is handload only or will become hard to locate due to it's unique nature.
- Scopes/Iron Sights, can use either without severe modifications to the rifle (ie drill/tap a Garand is a no no).
- Out of the box function, nothing I need to buy then add barrels/bushings/triggers etc to make it really accurate.
- Action, I prefer semi-auto but have nothing against bolt action.
So what would you suggest? I'm open to new / used / surplus / etc and curious to hear suggestions so I can do more research. I'm aware of many possible rifles but I know someone will suggest something here I haven't even thought of yet.
