Greetings,
I am new to shooting. I just received a pre-64 Winchester .22 and will soon acquire a scoped deer rifle for hunting. The problem is, I am physically unable to close just my left eye. The first time I shot my .22 I used a piece of tape to cover my left eye and was spot-on the target. I have read some discussions in the shotgun forum about using a dot on shooting glasses to preserve binocular vision while blocking the non-dominant eye from the sights. Any feedback would be much appreciated; I am not sure how my inability to close my left eye will pan out with a scoped rifle.

Thank you!

Instead of a dot on the shooting glasses try something like vasoline or the matte finish clear tape to keep the other pupil from trying to dialate because of the dark

Dominant eye

I shoot right handed, On election day my right eye fell apart. Now I am left eye dominant. I had to force my self to concentrate with the right eye and let the right open this has been going on for one year now I am use to it.

If you insist on covering it, go to CVS drug store and get a black eye patch.

several options available; there are glasses with one eye blacked out or fuzzed over so you don't use it, go to almost any full service drug store and get a black eye patch, learn to shoot with both eyes open.

When my youngest son was shooting recurve (age 7) he would try to use his left eye. he was RH and couldn't make the switch to LH shooting (guns or bows), so, to train him to use his right eye (yes we switched his dom eye) we put a patch over it. now he shoots guns and bows with his right eye no problem.

Shiver me timbers, is ye eye patch not good enough for ye? :D

I agree that shooting with both eyes open can be beneficial as it allows you to utilize a greater field of view and faster target acquisition.

:)

i have a friend who is left eye dominant but shoots right handed. he wear an eye patch when hunting and just slips it down over his left eye before shooting. i've been with him numerous time when he has killed deer and elk, so it works for him.

I dunno if you wear glasses like I do but here's my solution to this problem

I took a pair of clip-on/flip up sunglasses and using black athletic tape completely obscured the non dominant side lense. I then removed the dominant side lens completely except for the crossbar. Tada! A pirates eye patch sorta thing for someone who wears glasses :)

My wife is right handed but left eye dominant and has had a fit with scoped. She now shoots a red dot reflex sight and can keep both eyes oped.

If your goal is to shoot with your weak eye and you don't want to look like a pirate, all you have to do is lick or smudge your shooting glasses on the lens in front of your dominant eye. Your weak eye will lead with the clearest picture.

You should be able to shoot either rifle just fine with both eyes open. Remember, you should be focusing on your front sight, not the target.

When you guys first started trying to shoot both eyes open could you ever not see the sights at all?

All the tests point to me being right eye dominant, but if I shoulder a rifle from either side I don't see the sights at all. The guides say that you should see double vision, but all I see is down the side of the gun. I can close one eye and line up the sights, then open the other eye and they disappear. I've started putting scotch tape over my left eye on my shooting glasses; hopefully it's just a matter of time. I know my eyesight is piss poor: color blind with coke bottle glasses, although I wear contacts virtually 24/7.

Anyone else have this problem?

No, are you sure that you have the sights aligned correctly (had to ask). Try looking down the sights normally (one eye closed) and then open up the other to see how it looks.

:)

Please read before commenting. "I can close one eye and line up the sights, then open the other eye and they disappear."

Get a Trijicon and use them both!...well if you have 3K to spend that is. But there are choices for two eye shooting.

If you can attend a club or match where there a number of smallbore shooters, I'm absolutely sure that you could get excellent help and a resolution very quickly. Absolutely no one knows as much about vision and shooting as the iron sight smallbore shooters. And yes I did note you said that you were using a scope.
