Last week I took my Marlin Model 60 to the range. I had no issues with FTFs. I used the same ammo this week (Remington Golden Bullets :barf: and Federal Bulk) and had multiple FTFs.

It started with the Golden Bullets. I switched to Federal. That worked for a while. Then multiple FTFs with those. The dud casings had imprints where the firing pin hit the round. They looked similar to the fired casings but perhaps the indents on the fired casings were a bit more defined. I fed the rounds again and most fired but a few refused.

I will be going back to the range next weekend. I'm going to give it a thorough cleaning which I didn't do after last week. Last week I shot a lot of the Golden Bullets and I know those are dirty, but this is a model 60... a little dirt shouldnt be so much of a problem, should it?

The other diagnosis is the firing pin is damaged. I try not to dry fire much, but I it happened when I cleaned the action 2 weeks ago.

How do I tell if the firing pin is damaged?
Anyone had a similar problem or know of something else I should look for?

Thanks,
Matt

More then likely the bolt is full of crap & crud and slowing down the firing pin.

There also can be a build-up of bullet lube & unburned powder between the bolt face & barrel face. This holds the bolt open slightly, increases headspace, and can cause mis-fires.

Clean her good and try again.

A damaged firing pin from dry-firing is very unlikely on a model 60.

I agree. I just cleaned my 99m1 really well that I haven't shot since I was a kid some 15 or so years ago until a week or so ago and it would not feed right, or eject. Not sure it has ever been cleaned. I noticed it had a ton of build up, almost completely filling the slots on each side of the bore that the extractors sit in and tons of residue built up in the corners where the bolts rest when closed. It was keeping the bolt from seating all the way and would not extract the shell. I haven't had the chance to fire it yet, but it will load and eject like butter now. Also, if you have a firing pin issue, you could alway replace it really easily. You can find them at numrich (e-gunparts.com). I just got some parts to replace the worn out ones on mine.

I used e-gunparts to buy a replacement sear spring. I really like them. If I order anymore 60 parts I might as well start building a custom (recycled) junker. :D

I know that even with a 22 it cost more to shoot the better grade ammo but stay away from the buttomend stuff. Some has so much wax on it not shoot groups worth a poop. and or will dirtly up a action so bad it will slow function. Some just does not shot with relieability. I typicaly shhot cci's good stuff ,mini=mags stinger and velocites and federal target and gold bulk not there cheaper stuff and now off brands. Have almost 100% to shoot with a 250 round box of federal match in both ruger marks a 10/22 and a old colt huntman. With cheap stuff 7 out of ten maybe.
