Please dont send me to rimfire central. I respect the opinions of the people here.

I am thinking of getting a .22, of wich I am not a fan of because of lack of recoil, boom, and range. Funny thing is that is why I want one with the additional reasons of cheap ammo, quiet (relative) subsonic rounds, and varmints around my home in the city (groundhogs under the neighbors porch, skunks, and about 25 stray cats that the neighbor feeds).

Finally, my question. I am looking at the 10/22. Forget the riffle I am also looking at the Cabellas catalog. In the new master catalog page 577 bottom right, it shows a polymer blend barrel. Will this work like a heavy barrel? Anyone have any experience with one of these?

I am also looking at the Coirelite and Houge stocks on that page as well as the Volquartson trigger. With all of that I figured on a Nikon 4X scope (Pro Staff) on page 641.

I guess I really dont need a 10/22 just some of the guts. Can I buy them anywhere new?

I'm not familiar with the polymer barrel in the Cabela's catalog, but it sounds a lot like one of the tensioned carbon barrels. A friend has one and it shoots very nicely and isn't nearly as heavy as my bull barreled gun. Downside's it was very expensive.

I have the Hogue stock and like it a lot. Ditto for the Volq trigger kit.

For your 10/22 needs, I highly recommend OnTarget Guns. Bill, the proprieter is a great guy who's willing to help in 'most any way. Prices are great and shipping charges are very low.

Many subsonic rounds will not cycle the action in the 10/22, it sounds like a good bolt gun, like the Marlin 25 or 880 may be the ticket for you (Marlin 25 is an outstanding gun and very inexpensive)

I don't know how On Targets Volquartsen & Power Custom parts compare to other vendors, but the Hogue Overmold stock they sell for $80 can be had from MidwayUSA and most other places I've found them for around $55.

The best replacement barrel for the money is any Green Mountain barrel.

DO NOT BUY a "carbon" barrel by Butler Creek. Only the carbon fiber barrels by Volquartsen and Magnum Research are tensioned. Others are merely sleeved and are inferior.

The factory stock can be rechannelled for a larger barrel.

Best thing to do is to shop around for prices. Sometimes Natchez or Midway may have Volq or Power Custom items on sale. Cabella's is usually pretty expensive for everything. I've bought many items from Ontarget and I've been satisfied each time. Nothing has ever gone wrong.

I just bought a Volq THM CF barrel and it's a sweeeet shooter. I replaced my Green Mountain barrel with it. The Green Mountain barrels are a bargain for the kind of accuracy you get out of them. I opted for a lighter weight. With the heavy barrels and increased accuracy, I'd go for a higher power scope than 4X.

See if you can find a CZ-452 Ultra Lux--also sometimes called the CZ-452 training rifle. It's a high quality bolt 22 with a 29" barrel.

The long barrel makes it pretty quiet even with standard .22LR. With .22 shorts it's very quiet. Avoid the colibri ammo or the real low velocity caps as they may stick in the long barrel.

They're going for about $200 now, but the supply is drying up and the price is rising as that happens.

and varmints around my home in the city

Are you sure it is safe to use a .22 if you live in the city? How about legalities -- any local code that says you cannot discharge firearms in city limits?

I don't live in a city, but even out in the country where I live, the place is now so built up that I would not even dream of using a .22 for varmint control -- I had to start using an air rifle.

You know your area of course, and maybe it is not a problem -- in which case "Never Mind":D
