I have en route to me a Leupole VXIII, 4.5-14X40, 30MM, long range, adjustable parallax with Boone and Crockett reticle.

I need help with the subtle nuances of scope mounting. I have mounted base, rings and scope before, but not on a scope of this quality.

The scope is going on a Remington 700, 7MM mag. and potentially on a remington 300 Ultra Mag. used strictly for hunting.

Are Leupold bases/rings adequate? Is there an industry standard for quality or is a base/ring a base/ring?

Is Lapping the rings necessary?

Is there an idiots guide to scope mounting online anywhere?

Throw in your .02.
thanks!

stay away from Leopold STD rings. They are not strong enough to handle a heavy scope and recoil (at least 7STW recoil). I ate three sets before I learned.......

There are several quality ring/base sets available, but you will pay for them. Badger comes to mind......

On a budget, I use Weaver Grand Slam bases (all steel) or Nightforce bases with Burris rings that are lapped.

ditto on the ring choice.as far as lapping goes, with me i check to see how true the receiver is,than after the base or bases are fitted, check the trueness, and lap as nessary.there is enough of a difference in part to part fit to cause problems sometimes.the first time i don't check and just screw everything together is the time i bend or break a $1000.00 scope.not good.
