RKBA guide to Senate races?

Beren:

In your interesting letter to Congressman Hoeffel, the following is to be found at the close:"I hope you will reform your anti-liberty positions and become a candidate worthy of representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate."

Such "reform" is, I submit, something akin to Pigs Flying, another action that is not going to take place.

The gentleman who ran against Senator Specter in the primary elections might well have been better for gun owners than Specter, however Congressman Toomey lost his bid. It remains that Congressman Hoeffel would be very much worse.

Pennsylvania voters who happen to be gun owners need to keep that fact in mind.

I think Langenator has been paying attention as I would agree with him entirely.

Right now Republicans stand to lose the following Senate seats:

Illinois:
Retiring Republican Fitzgerald was anti-gun too so this only affects who holds the Senate majority, which is still important.

Democrats stand to lose the following Senate seats:

Georgia:
Zell Miller was pro-gun; but his likely Republican replacement is too. So this offsets the loss of Illinois without changing the count in the Senate towards a more pro-gun Senate.

South Carolina :
Jim DeMint has a better than 10 point lead on his opponent in the polls. Not only that; but his opponent (the State Education secretary) just had to release news that SC SAT scores were the lowest in the nation. DeMint is a GOA A rated candidate - and we know that GOA doesn't hand out As easily - replacing former F rated candidate Fritz Hollings. +1 for gun owners in the Senate count and +1 for a Republican majority (which keeps Ted Kennedy that much further from leadership of the committee that decides gun control law).

The following races are running tied or near tied after the margin of error is factored in:

Alaska:
Both candidates oppose renewal of the ban and are generally pro-gun, only counts for Senate Majority purposes.

Colorado:
Tied neck and neck. Former incumbent was moderately pro-gun. The Republican Pete Coors is strongly pro-gun and the Dem is a clear anti.

Florida:
Republican Mel Martinez opposes the ban and supports the Second. His opponent does not - a chance to gain a seat on the antis as well here.

Louisiana:
Still up in the air essentially. Former incumbent voted for the ban so this is a chance to gain some ground.

North Carolina:
Rep. Richard Burr is trailing against the Dem candidate who is a former Clinton Chief of Staff and committed gun grabber. He needs a boost to win; but he is within striking distance with a good turnout. If we win here, we replace another F rated candidate with a good pro-gun candidate.

Oklahoma:
This Senate race was cited by GOA as being the most important Senate race of the year and they endorsed Dr. Tom Coburn for it. His Democratic challenger Brad Carson has a B rating though and is pro gun - only counts for Senate Majority.

South Dakota:
Republican (GOA B rating) John Thune leads Daschle by 2% now. Inside the margin of error; but steadily gaining - we definitely want to win this seat. Daschle has poured a ton of money into this campaign. Being able to defeat the current Senate minority leader against such odds would be a huge feather in the hat of gun owners and send yet another bold print message to the Democrats that their anti-gun policies will cost them at the polls.

So realistic best case scenario, we pick up 5 seats in the Senate and Republicans maintain control. Realistic worst case scenario, we lose 1 extra pro-gun seat over the March vote AND control of the Senate reverts to Democrats. In this case, we will be fighting hard to prevent another ban in January 2005.

Thank you, sirs.

I knew that there were folks here who could provide this kind of update. With all the hull-a-baloo these past few months the senate and house races have been simmering on the back burner.

VA 2nd House District has a real burp - the incumbent, Schrock (R), this past week cancelled, leaving just 4 days to pick a candidate before the door closed. Thelma Drake, a state legislature type was named and has to start from scratch. She's against a newcomer, former Marine, who would have had a free ride if that 4 days had run out. VCDL has Drake as a +/- "B" re guns.

Let's hope we prevail.

Thanks again.

In my home state of Washington, incumbent Dem. Patty Murray's (GOA F rating) lead over likely challenger Rep. George Nethercutt (GOA A- rating) is somewhere around 9 to 11%. It looks like the Dems will retain that seat, although I wouldn't count Nethercutt out by any stretch-he unseated then Speaker of the House Tom Foley in 1994.

Nethercutt's challenge is that his base is in Spokane, while Murray's is in Seattle. Nethercutt needs to make inroads in the I-5 corridor to pull off the upset.

Didn't get to vote in FL, being a registered Libertarian,

But sent my aged Dad out to vote for Klayman, or if he wanted someone electable, Martinez. Guess I too will have to vote for Martinez just to make sure the unusually loony person the Dems are running this year doesn't get in.

At least I won't have a preppy, a Yalie, and a spook for my Congresscritter anymore. Maybe he'll be able to speak truth to Neocons when he takes charge of the CIA?

Been to the NRA web site but could not find their ratings???

Any body know where they are?

Don't forget to keep an eye on those running in your local races. Someday they may grow up to be elected to the federal level and can really wreck havoc with 2nd amendment rights. Also it seems we all ought to be vigilant for states enacting their own "AWB" 's. Don't forget Patty Murray "a mom in tennis shoes"!

Put your money where your mouths are

I contributed cash to

1.) Tom Coburn - Oklahoma

2.) John Thune - South Dakota

3.) Alan Keyes - Illinois

I am a life member of the G.O.A. , a member of the NRA, I contribute to J.P.F.O., and I forget what else.

If you are going to talk the talk - WALK the WALK ...

regards all

Alaska:
Both candidates oppose renewal of the ban and are generally pro-gun, only counts for Senate Majority purposes.

IMO I'm not sure that is true. As Governor, Knowles sold out to the ecolgists more than once and cost Alaskans jobs. I believe he would sell out to the Democrat powerbrokers in D.C as well. He would vote with Chuck Ted Hillary and the rest.

It's true that Lisa voted with Boxer's trigger lock folks in march. When she got the e-mails and phone calls from home, that foolishness stopped. Although most Alaskans don't approve of how she got her senate seat, they think she is doing a fair job.

Re Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania:

I had a form letter form his D.C. office, dated 1 October, that as usual claimed his strong support for "the right of law abiding citizens to own guns".

He indicated/claimed that he had co-sponsored the Firearms Owners Protection Act, also known as Volkmer-McClure, which has done some good, except for the fact that the 1986 Machinegun Ban became attached to it, in an unrecorded voice vote.

He claimed "original co-sponsorship" of Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which was "poisoned pilled to death" by Kennedy, Schumer, Clinton, Feinstein et al.

At other times, he has claimed he opposed the original Assault Weapons Ban, though he did vote for the underlying bill, that's the 1994 Crime Bill.

He also co-sponsored S. 253, the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2003, how do they ever manage to dream up such impressive sounding titles for legislative proposals, do they have some special machine for such work?? Problem with this, as I see it is that such legislation sets up a specially privileged class of persons, current and former government employees. Such action strikes me as being the very worst sort of public policy, and by the bye, to anyone who claims that having attained desired ends, that the police will now help the rest of us, had best give up smoking those funny cigaretts.

I believe that respecting any aspect of firearms, Specter's opponent Representative Hoffel is much worst that Arlen Specter is, however having had the opportunity to send Specter packing in the primaries, when Pat Toomey ran against him and lost a close election, the people spoke, one might say, Hoffel seems worse than Specter.

Specter's web site address is http://specter.senate.gov
