Hi folks,

Has anybody else purchased/loaded/tested any of the .224" 55 Gr. FMJ-BT's that RMR currently has for sale? I ordered 2000 of them to use since the Hornady 55 Gr. are all bought up, and have a question...

First off... These were sitting in my mailbox 6 days after placing the order. I did NOT expect such a fast turn-around given the absolute deluge of orders that RMR is currently experiencing. Well done Jake and Co.!

Ok... I was planning to just load these using Hornady 55 Gr. load data, thinking they'd be pretty similar to the Hornady bullets. But while seating a few of these, I discovered they're quite a bit longer than the Hornady 55 Gr. SP I use. Specifically, the distance from tip to canelure is quite a bit longer. So to load these with the canelure centered at the case mouth I have to push the COAL up to 2.250" or so, while Hornady calls for 2.200" for their SP and FMJ bullets (and I actually load them a bit shorter to center the canelure). That's a larger COAL change than I was expecting, and I wanted to see if anybody knows what bullet this actually is? I'd like to check against data for this actual bullet if possible before proceeding. I sent the question off to RMR as well and will share their answer when I hear back, but thought I'd ask here as well.

Or do folks more experienced with rifle loading think that big a COAL change is OK? I know I'm pushing the bullet closer to the rifling and reducing freebore by increasing COAL. My understanding is that for rifle cartridges that will increase pressure more than the increase in case volume will decrease it. Just want to stay safe.

Thanks very much!

Johnny's reloading bench did a lot of videos with this projectile and did a comparison directly to the Hornady Bob's bulk bullet and the Everglades round should be easy to find on YouTube

Thanks AJC1, I just found it:

It's from back in early 2018 though... Based on the description on the RMR site, I was assuming this was something new they just picked up (basically what was available)? That could be an old description though? Any idea if this is the same bullet they've stocked previously, or something different? The bullet shown in the video is definitely longer, similar to the one I just received...

Rmr has several 55grn bullets. I believe he tested some in house production bullets. Rmr sells a lit of pulled bullets and I have no idea what you got. Based on the video you found comparing the loads I believe you have a good place to start testing. He basically performs ocw testing if you do exactly what he does. Once dialed run the Berger seating test and be done.

Sounds good. He even did a series with H335, which is what I planned to use. His test load was the max charge I used for the hornady bullet as well so it seems to match what I had in mind too.

I also wanted to add, I found his first video in that series where he compares the actual projectiles. The bottom view makes it clear that what i received is not quite the same as what he tested, but it's very similar with the low canelure - looks like I'm fine to proceed

Thanks!
