I was looking at some Ajax fake stag grips on a resellers site for my SS 5 1/2 ROA. Not sure I'm in to fake stag but they were on sale.

So I was checking the reviews and more than a few folks had significant issues with them...and it was the same issue for most. The grips were too thick and that made the grip screw too short to hold them on. I looked at the date of the reviews and they were from older, 2004, to pretty new, 2008. I was hoping to see that the newer reviews were more positive and that the issue was cured but that seemed not to be the case.

Anyone else had this issue with Ajax?

I got Ajax red laminate grips #31 a few weeks back, for my new SS ROA. They were too thick for my hands, 1/16" at least, maybe 3/32" thicker than the frame at top. But the little brass screw (hard to find in the box) was long enough.

Fit to the gun was less than perfect.

I have since rasped off a fair amount of wood, and the checkering, so they fit my hands. Not yet finished.

That doesn't sound at all comforting. Is there a grip maker that I can send my ROA and get it fitted correctly...I also want a blind nut in one panel so the screw doesn't exit one side and leaves a smooth grip on that side.

Did you contact the outfit in the following thread? They construct grips with a blind drill hole in your choice of side.

I did a Google search for "Ruger Grips" and clicked on this custom grip maker's link, and then clicked on Ruger "Old XR3 Grips" and found item #267:

#267 SOLD Price $95.00 plus $4.30 shipping Available BLIND DRILLED Left or Right Side or with regular grip screw -- Highly Figured Claro Walnut

Evidently this grip maker is making them with the choice of which side has a blind drill hole.
Maybe others are making them too.
The thumbnail picture showing the actual grips is absent.

I have used clc custom grips and can recommend him highly. He does excellent, high quality work on single action Ruger grips and is very easy to work with.

clc custom grips certainly look incredible. Almost too incredible and too pretty to use. I tend to shoot my ROA and shoot it a lot. I already have GD scratch on the frame that someone else is going to have to polish out. it's beyond my skills. I'd hate to put a pair of close to $200.00 grips on the gun and treat them like I do.

My hands are LARGE. I'm 6'6" with ham sized hands, so the reportedly wider Ajax grips appealed to me but having to take a freakin' rasp to the grips to make them fit and a too short screw just didn't make sense. The $55.00 and likely more durable, or at least more disposable, synthetic material did make sense....but it sounds like Ajax grips sorta suck...

I saw a set of blind screw grips at a gun show for $70.00 that had to be a synthetic polymer due to their color but I didn't have the gun with me to make sure they fit.

-----as an aside, While I'm trying to find someone to polish out my scratch. Has anyone successfully had all the goofy warning stampings removed off an ROA without grinding away half the pistol? Mine has warning stampings all over it, on top of the barrel, on the cylinder even on the frame (I think). I imagine that removing those would leave flat spots all over the gun that would likely be as awful as the stampings...maybe not as silly looking but probably odd looking, to say the least.

Ruger sells their white grips for the Old Army for $59.

Despite their low price of only $19.56, Pachmayr grips are still some of the nicest and this Presentation Grip fits the Ruger Old Army.

Pachmayr states that they're "perfect for large hands".
