Road trip/vacation which gun should I bring?

The wife and I are making the trip up to a cabin in NC for a week long stay. So I'm thinking I want to have a gun in case we breakdown somewhere and also to bring along while doing some hiking up there.

My choices are glock 19, j-frame 38 or my little p32. I'm leaning towards the glock right now because of capacity but the little 32 is so easy to pocket carry.

Just curious if you guys had any strategic thoughts on road trip guns?

If you are driving in a car why do you only have to take one? I would take the J-frame to keep in my pocket while you are on the road and the G19 for once you are in your cabin and for hiking. Sounds like you may be in a somewhat remote location and 15 rounds of +P would be a little more comforting than 5 rounds of .38 in those circumstances.
 
Another "J" frame with extra rounds for hiking. I'd take 100 rounds of plinking ammo with me. When hiking I would pocket 50 rds of plinking or "just in case" happens. A speed loader for a back up of defense rounds.
 
I would take both...

FYI, I usually always carry a full size 1911 and when traveling a small rifle.
 
Another vote for multiple guns. G19 for a real gun, and P32 because the gun you have in your pocket is better than the one on the nightstand at home.

When I travel I usually pack a pocket pistol, a full-size pistol, and usually a long gun depending on length and location of trip and applicable laws.
 
I didn't really think of taking multiple guns, it makes sense. Plus if something happens my wife will have one too. The 19 is my edc so that will definitely come and perhaps the 32 on my ankle and the j frame for her.
 
What you're least able to hit with under stress so that you can get more practice in while you're gone.
 
My vote would be for the J-frame, especially if you're going hiking. The J-frame has the advantage of multiple ammunition types.
 
Biggest challenge I have are gun laws. Are you leaving the state or do you live in NC or have a permit in all of the states you will be in?

Maybe that is only a problem in the North East.
 
Great question. I live in Florida so I need to research the gun laws of ga,sc and nc since I will be at least passing through them. I thought nc was a reciprocal state to florida but not sure.
 
When I travel to NY, I have to break the gun down... in my truck that means putting the magazine in a seperate compartment than the gun... in my bike in is one part in each saddle bag. That may be enough for your trip. If you breakdown, on the side of a dark road... well... laws become secondary at that point I suppose.

I just checked and luckily all 3 are reciprocal states. The only funky thing I noticed was in SC you have to notify law enforcement when they approach you that you are a cc permit holder and where you gun is located. Seems easy enough though.

But in all realism the J-frame should be good and light for hiking. Is it just a .38 or is it .357? If it were a .357 that would cinch it for me. Better for bear than a 9mm.
