I am considering a Rock Island .45 (to use as a car gun mostly) was wondering what experince people have had with them. ('They suck get a springfield/colt/kimber/SVI/STI/Dan Wesson/Ed Brown/Wilson/SIG GSR/Les Baer/Rock River/Tibbets/charles daly/anyother gun that i missed which is greater than 300 bucks' doesn't help)
I can get one for about 300 tags, title and liscense and i really don't "need one" per se so...

I've had the "GI Style"

for three years, nothing but good stuff to say about mine. Mainly, pull trigger, goes bang- every time.

If you could find a Norinco- IF. But thats a whole nother deal.

If you get one, be sure to put a few boxes of ammo downrange before depending on it in a life threatening situation. Some need a bit of a break-in before they're reliable.

I've got one.

For $300 it's OK. (but I'd rather have the $300 invested in 2 Makarovs)

The springs in mine were very poor quality.
The trigger/grip safety spring broke.
The recoil spring was very weak and poorly made.

Only a few of my 20+ magazines will go all the way into the grip because the mag well isn't wide enough inside.

It shoots pretty far to the right. If I drifted the sight far enough to correct the sight would be sticking slightly off the slide.

The barrel is VERY rough inside, tool marks.
But surprisingly it holds a fair group.

Lately I've been using it for a 22 conversion but it's started doubling.
Maybe it's also got a hammer/sear/disconnector problem to.

I'm not trying to get rid of it, but I wouldn't buy another.

I just now got back from the range after putting another hundred rounds through mine. My son is down, and he got to put the first rounds through his brand new P01, and I thought I'd give the RIA and the Sptingfirld Loaded Operator anther wringing out.

To date I have not had a single problem with mine, but these old eyes are hard pressed to get the sights to work. I think it's time to upgrade them to something easier on the bifocals! (It's GOTTA be the bifocals, NOT my eyes! :))

People who have had that problem installed a new bushing, fixes it right up. Barrel tool marks are common, but it doesn't seem to have too big of an impact on accuracy.

Rock Islands are good value for the money. For a few dollars more for changing springs, extractors, etc. it still comes in cheap and better. Even the $1,000 + guns are still capable of failures. Got my RIA and changed the recoil spring and extractor (all done by myself) and until now have never looked back.
