Rock Salt 12ga for less leathal

Anybody hear about this for less lethal? Range? Damage to human targets? I've vaugely remember seeing loaded rock salt rounds and the last gun show I went to.

Yes, it has been used. I seem to recall that there are a few here who have been on the receiving-end of rock salt in their youths.

I'd advise against it for modern days. If you are justified in pulling a 12ga. on someone(s), you'd better have justification to use deadly force.

I'd also advise against rocksalt just for it's corrosive potential.

Absolutely nothing good can come of it. If you saw it for sale at a gun show, you saw a crazy person selling it. You can't shoot at someone to scare or hurt them. If you're getting out a gun, you better mean serious business... and you better have a defensible reason (according to the laws of your state). Rock salt loads are bad in every possible way.

While you could have gotten away with using rock salt 50 years ago in rural areas (watermelon thieves in the South are the old stereotype for this sort of thing), those days are long gone. Nowadays you'll be arrested and sued. Don't even try it.

From a technical standpoint, shooting salt in a shotgun would probably be a bad idea, since the salt would react with the hot gases of the powder and corrode the interior of the barrel if not thoroughly cleaned soon after firing the rounds.

I was at the Indy 1500 gun show in Indianapolis Indiana probably a couple years ago when I saw them. The corrosive property never occured to me. A friend was trying to rid his land of stray hounds/coydogs without burying anything. Keep spooking his horses. I brought up the aformentioned round without thinking...the question was brought up about human targets as well...now here I am. Thanks for the replies.

If your just trying to scare off dogs use 9 shot. if they are 40 yards away they will just go yip yip as they run for the hills.

I have heard of using it for dogs and such, but as far as pulling the trigger on a person.. better believe I am going to have something more substancial

Yeah, I have loaded pinto beans, because I wanted to scare dogs away from my chickens and know for sure that I wasn't going to kill them, don't expect any kind of pattern with it like that though.

I would never shoot anyone with a non-lethal round.
