I know nothing about Romney. Tell me - RINO or Republican?

Governor Mitt Romney will announce at 6 p.m. that he will not seek re-election to a second term, setting the stage for an expected campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, a senior aide to the governor said today.

The aide told the Boston Globe that Romney will announce that he will fill out his term, which ends in January, 2007. The move is widely seen as another step in his plans to launch a presidential campaign. His announcement today is expected to be televised live from the State House.

The 58-year-old businessman, son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney, has spent less than three years in elective office, but in that time the state has closed a $3 billion budget deficit without raising taxes, schools have scored first in national math and science tests and Romney held out until the Legislature gave him a tough new drunken driving law he demanded.

Romney began calling supporters and other political figures this afternoon to let them know of his decision. In between calls, he was putting the "final touches" on his announcement speech, which his wife, Ann, planned to attend, the source said.

The governor and his wife were scheduled to visit the Globe Santa sleigh in the city's bustling Downtown Crossing area at mid-afternoon, but the appearance was abruptly canceled. The source said the governor instead attended a luncheon for Hurricane Katrina volunteers at a nearby private club, after attending a Christmas party for members of the Governor's Council in his closed suite of offices.

The announcement ends months of speculation over whether Romney, who took office after winning the 2002 gubernatorial election, would seek the presidency after only one term in office. He confirmed last spring that he was testing the presidential waters. During the past year, he has made frequent trips out of state, often to states that are considered key primary battle grounds in a presidential campaign.

His decision not to run for re-election clears the way for his hand-picked successor, Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, to officially launch her campaign. She is expected to face opposition from businessman Christy Mihos.

In the Democratic primary, Attorney General Thomas Reilly and former civil rights enforcer Deval Patrick are seeking their party's nomination.

Romney had cast himself as "a red speck in a blue state" during an October speech to a Washington think-tank, one of many similar comments across the country during the past year that had been viewed as disparaging Massachusetts -- the land of the Kennedys and two failed Democratic candidates for president portrayed as out-of-touch liberals.

Should he run for president, a decision he is expected to announce closer to the 2008 election, Romney will need to break through a pack of more prominent Republicans, including Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

There has also been an undercurrent of concern among Christian conservatives, particularly in the vital South, rooted in his Mormon faith. One political operative in South Carolina branded the religion a "cult."

Sad for Massachusetts... as he is the last one with any sense in the state! Romney is a highly-educated man surrounded by morons in Massachusetts! I hope his run for presdient is successful, but I pity Massachusetts losing its last citizen with a brain!

Romney's a RINO
He's not rabidly anti, but he's not a big friend for us either.

Reilly is our biggest problem right now. I'm not sure if he'll do more damage as Governor or continuing as AG.

Are you just being a troll on every thread, now?

I try to add to discussion, as my prior post on this thread did, offering my opinion... I see yours didn't. Why?

Based on what I recollect of Gov. Romney from his stint as President and CEO of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee I would tend to rate him somewhere between Bush and McCain but probably closer to McCain. I haven't kept up with his term as MA governor so I can't comment on his current political leanings. I would be interested on comments by MA residents.

Masswhole here...
Romney is the best thing in Massachusetts politics. You can find fault with him on many issues but the reality is that he is surrounded by Left-wing Lunatics. I will be sorry to see him go.

However, he will fail completely on the national circuit. He would be a great cabinet member for Condi's first term.

One cannot nor should not try to classify Romney as "Republican or RINO."

Like every other governor with his eye on the White House, he has to play to two constituencies, state and national.
Last year, when the federal AWB was about to expire, our lawmakers in the General Court decided that wouldn't do, so adopted the ban. Romney signed it. At that point, he had done nothing that Bush Jr. hadn't promised to do on numerous occasions.
To satisfy a national conservative audience, Romney has stated opposition to such things as stem cell research, and support of the death penalty.

My point? He's a politician, and like both Bushes, has shown a willlingness, on occasion, to trade our gun rights for votes.
That said, I'm disappointed that he's not running for re-election, since he's a hell of a lot better than the alternatives the state Democrats have to offer.

To the member who wrote that he is the last person in the Bay State with brains - I invite you to visit the commonwealth. Perhaps after visiting a few dozen sportsmen's clubs and gun shops, attending a machine gun shoot or two, you'll come away with a different opinion.

All you can stand about him.

If Romney, Rudy, and McCain are the three GOP options, the Dems will win in 08, because I for one won't do the lesser of two evils again. Did that once, and have regretted it daily since. I am hoping Tancredo gives it a shot.

If the immigration issue doesn't go away, Tancredo may be far more electable than many think.

Romney's only been in any political office for three years or so.

We know that he's a very good business leader and practical economist, and that he managed to translate those skills towards a succesfull term as Governor.

Problem is, if you read his political history, he's obviously been learning as he governs about purely political matters, like gun control and abortion.

Combine that with the fact that he's been trying to get elected in an extremely 'liberal' state, and we really can't tell what he'll do as president.

I'm HOPING he'll come out as a leader on conservative issues, because I WANT to vote for him.

But I haven't seen what i need to yet.
