Rossi Model 92 & Peep sights

Can a Rossi 92 be drilled and tapped for Williams peep sights. I have an older pre lawyer safety .44 Mag with conventional notch type sights. I would like to convert it to a Williams, like I have on my Model 94. Has anyone done this? If so please post a picture. I am concerned that the locking system on the 92 may prevent locating the sight in the same position as the model 94.

+1 on skinner. I had one on a rossi .44 lever and it worked fine for a very reasonable price.

I had a Lyman 66A installed on one of my .357 Rossis (16" Trapper) several years ago. Picture would take forever to upload (still on dial-up); sorry. If one of the mounting screws should happen to intrude into the locking bar recess, just dress it down until it's flush or slightly below. Not a big deal, as there'll still be enough threads engaged to hold it solidly. A drop of light-duty Loc-Tite on both screws and it's all good.

Hopefully, you'll luck-out as I did and won't need a taller front sight. While mine's integral with the front barrel band, most of the "standard" 20" carbines I've seen have had it in a dovetail in the barrel just abaft the band. IMO, the integral set-up would actually make replacing the front sight less of a PITA, as Rossi used a dovetail cut that's significantly larger than the nominal 3/8" that's the "standard" in most of the industry. That can make coming up with a "clean" looking installation on a replacement a real challenge to one's ingenuity.

I drilled and tapped my Browning 92 for a Lyman receiver sight. There's plenty of steel in the sidewall by the locking bolt. Just open the action when you do it so the drill and tap doesnt get into the bolt. Best to strip the action so you canc lean the chips out easily.

I talked with a reputable smith in San Antonio over the weekend. He says no problem mounting either the Williams or the Lyman sight. He said to buy the one that fits the Winchester 94. He also said that I may need a taller front sight. Mine is the one that is incorporated into the front barrel band and looks like it's all one piece. I can't see any evidence of it being pinned. Thanks for the comments, now I've got to decide if it's worth it.

I've put Lyman receiver sights on my Browning 92, Browning 1886 rifle and carbine, and havent had to change the front sights on any of them. Some of the newer, non-traditional style receiver sights need taller front sights, but so far, I've never needed to on my guns.

If you do happen to do it, you may want to have your gunsmith mill a dovetail in the barrel just behind the front band, and grind the band smooth, or just buy a smooth band. You'll have more options for front sights, but I've been pretty happy with my Brownings with the factory front sights.
