I've been poking around lookin' for a cheap target rifle/toy that might get a bit of use hunting, probably in a .30-06 or .308... I can get my hands on a Rossi single-shot pretty cheaply, but are they worth half a flying flip?
You get what you pay for. If you are looking for a cheap beater that you aren't worried about getting some scratches on, then it should be fine. If you are looking for a rifle that will be a family heirloom, then you probably won't be happy with it.
They're light enough that they probably recoil pretty well, so probably a better choice to carry a lot, and shoot when necessary. If you can handle that, you may be satisfied with it.
What are you hunting for? If deer, then I would go with the Trifecta that comes with a 20Ga, .22lr, and .243 Win in a youth size and then add a Limbsaver small size slip on recoil pad. This combo really takes the ouch out of pulling the trigger and makes the LOP the same or near an adult rifle. I also added a Center Point 4-16 x 40 scope from Wal Mart and I can shoot it at 100 yards to group at 1.25 to 1.5 inches with 5 shots all day long. I haven't shot it out to 200 yards yet but I am sure it will be pretty accurate. I was shooting both 80 Gr and 100 Gr Remington Core Lokt ammo.
I am quite happy with mine as you probably have already noticed.
Get an elastic ammo holder and you can get pretty fast with follow up shots if you practice too. I hope to never need a follow up shot but I am practicing just in case!
