I went to the range last saturday, and took the GPR out. Tried 777 FFg for the first time in this gun. Dropped the load down a bit to 80 grains to compensate for the stouter 777. Shot to the same point of impact at 50 yards as the pyrodex load did, in a raggedy cloverleaf. 4 wet patches, 4 dry patches, wipe it down and it was clean! Awesome!
I have to admit, I have forgotten how much fun a shooting a round ball gun is. Almost no recoil, more accurate than most of the inlines I've shot, and just plain cool. I almost forgot why I got an inline to begin with, when my Dad reminded me. He said "ffft!" emulating a wet caplock not going off- when I had a dandy 7 point not 15 yards from me once. Dad was standing next to me. Two days later Dad got a chance and... ffft! Same thing happened to him. Now mind you it was drizzly sleety crapiness both days, but now we've both shot deer in foul weather with our modern muzzleloaders, and never looked back.
Until now.
I was talking to my buddy Mike a couple of days after shooting, and told him about the GPR, and how much I liked shooting it, and he says" Why do we spend all the money on modern muzzleloaders, when the ol' cap and ball guns did fine?" I thought about the superior energy my Omega gets at 100+ yards, but then thought "I haven't shot a deer past 65-70 yards in my life." I had no argument, other than rain.
I tried to set up my Omega for 200 yards last season. Then I saw a deer at 200 yards, and realized just how far away it really is. I took the scope off and put the peep sight back on. But my newfangeld inline might just sit in the case this year.
