Ruger #1 worth keeping?

Guy I went to grade school with and reconnected with after high school invited me over for a beer to his dad's, I had been there many times sledding as a kid and for sleepovers and knew his dad had lots of gun cabinets in the living room, I knew they were all filled with guns but his dad didn't want us fooling around near the cabinets. Fast forward 20 odd years, his dad got excited to see me and to find that I had a keen interest in guns and stuff, he had 3 cabinets, 27-30 or so Ruger #1's, no two the same. Beautiful collection. Some of Rugers very best imo. Stunning.

All I can think about is a little mule kicking me in the shoulder every time I pull the trigger....

Not a keeper, and sadly, probably not worth as much as you'd hope for. But isn't that the way it always is?

Put a limbsaver recoil pad on it. My No. 1 Tropical in .375 H&H is a pussycat, I compare it to a 30-06 with 180gr loads.
In good shape it should bring $1300-$1500+

Long ago I ran across a guy that had a sportier weight single shot Ruger (#3 maybe, dunno) in .45-70. Had hand loads that were basically.458 Win Mag levels. IIRC, it had a plastic butt plate, not a good recoil pad. Think elephant rifle at .22 rim fire weight

I shot it once at late dusk, nearly dark. Fire ball was probably the size of a bushel basket. At the shot the muzzle was nearly straight up. I was black and blue from the top of my shoulder to the middle of my rib cage for a couple weeks.

I shot a #1S like that (22" 45-70 w hot loads).
Yup muzzle climb and shoulder punch was quite a bit.
That thin red pad didn't do much.

A #3 w that horrible curved buttplate would be wicked.

The OPs rifle looks to have a recoil pad that might work well. Its not a factory stock/pad.

I'd take it out and shoot it, see how well it shot, how it recoiled.......and then make a decision on what to do.
Some big stuff can be rather comfortable.

Then one can also not run things full throttle w heavies and add comfort.

Limbsaver pads may work but they're ugly.
No freakin way I'd put one on a Ruger #1.
Rather take the pain.

I personally think the Limbsaver pad looks better on the No. 1 than the original red pad. The Limbsaver actually works too.
Here's mine, and I'd rather have this on my gun and enjoy shooting it

Hmm...dies are $40 and 235 grain Speers are $20...less than the price of a box of ammunition! So if you have powder, primers, and cases already you'd be set up to load for this. A few people mentioned reduced loads. Trail Boss and H4895 will get you a chance to shoot without detaching your retinas or knocking fillings loose.

Even if I intended to sell, I couldn't resist a few shots. It's worth more than I'd care to have in it but if I had it already I'd give it a go.

I was discussing the fate of the #1 with my brother the other day and he said he absolutely loves the Ruger #1 and has always wanted one. Although he is my half brother, I must respect family and will keep the #1 and likely gift it to him.
