.375 ruger or .375 H&H.....

Which .375, the OG or the Ruger?

I've heard this sentiment before, but never the actual reason for it. What is the disadvantage of a belted magnum over a non-belted one?
My own opinion is the belt is really not needed. It is actually a think rim with an extractor groove in it. They headspace on the rim - belt - which sets up the condition of setting the shoulder back to insure easy chambering; this tends to wear out the cases faster. A normal bottle neck case with a standard rim is just as easy to headspace and easier to feed through the magazine.

I confess to not observing any serious malfunctions directly attributable to a belted case, but when it's my money, I will not spend my money on stuff I do not like.

Except for the .458 Win Mag and cartridges based on the .458 Win Mag, there is no other use for the belt.
Vern, I'd like to point out the 'belt' has just less extra diameter than the neck has around the bullet. Which means the case should headspace on the case mouth about as reliably as on the belt. This would mandate a taper crimp rather than a roll crimp, but I'm not convinced that isn't an impossible obstacle.

I pretty much agree with everything else.

Those feral cattle and axis deer had better start laying low! Sweet rifle, LoonWulf. Those groups are minute of cow right now.

You are inspiring me. I've been having a lot of fun playing with my light recoiling short actions: .243, .243AI, .260 Rem (a .260AI McGowen barrel should arrive later this week), etc. I have absolutely no need for a rifle in a dangerous game cartridge ... but I might keep my eye open for a good deal on a Remington action for a Remage build in .375 Ruger. I still don't think I'm ready to tackle chambering my own barrel blank. I'd like to get there some day, but think it more likely that I'd try that with something at the lower end of the cartridge scale.

There's definitely something that just makes you smile after sending one of these rounds down range.
They are large enough you can hear them hit the target backer or ground like a pistol, which might be part of it for me. Probably clang the crap out of steel....gonna have to go buy a little plate and try it.

If nutted barrels we're available, and I didn't dislike doing stock work so much, I'd probably have gone that route on my Abolt. It's good option for the home gunsmith.

Doing a traditional install isn't that difficult either. Barrel removal is actually usually the hardest part.

A short chambered barrel is usually only about .05 from finished depth so it's not alot of work as long as it goes into the action properly. With common actions I've never seen a problem, infact I've never seen a problem period. I've heard and read about fitment issues from time to time but they are rare.

Reaming is just a matter of going slowly, using even pressure, sharp tools, decent cutting fluid, and cleaning the chamber and reamer offten.

Constant checking with a go gauge, basically every time you clean chamber and reamer pop the go guage in and see where your at.
And once the striped bolt closes on that, at that point I use lighter pressure and clean/check every rotation and keep cutting untill the bolt will start to close on a no go guage.

You can also get a micro meter reamer stop so you can cut in measured steps. Still need the go/no go guages tho.

Got out for a while yesterday and shot more of the h4350@83grns, which was the last of the keg i had. I actually ran out with 5 prepped cases left, so i loaded those with 73grn of Imr4895.
Suggested velocity for the h4350 load is 2690, average measured velocity for 5 rounds was 2640, ES in the single digits.
The imr4895, was supposed to to 2660, at a lower pressure point. Actual velocity was only measured for 3 rounds, and showed two at 2657, and the third at 2662 (Im actually surprised i remembered that without having to go get my magspeed). I will have to get more powder in the 4350 range, but for now I think ill keep playing with 4895.
Not enough shots to use as a basis for consistency, but its good to see QLs predictions to be so close. I want to try another powder to see if the trend continues.
Anyway, the two shots low left of the bullseye are the last 2 4895s, the three above are the h4350, I adjusted my sight up 1" after the first shot in the bull. Im pretty sure both loads hit near the same place, but having run out of both 4895s rounds to test, and wanting to save a few bullets to hunt with I called it a day with this rifle.

Again recoil was pretty mild, I was shooting prone out the back of my truck (forgot my table...yes this mindlessness is pretty normal)
worst thing that happened is I got my off hand index finger behind the pronounced grip cap, and it got smashed against my rear 2x4 rest support. It still stings.....

I took 6 rifles to the range, and between this and my 7mm (.22 wins by default), im not sure which was more entertaining.

Nice shooting! Shows real promise. Sorry about the hand ...

I'm still learning my way around QL. I need to measure the H20 capacity of some fired cases.

So am I. Right now ive only figured out the most basic changes to improve prediction accuracy, and it will still sometimes be way off.

Good to see it shooting so well, can't wait to see the hunting pics!
Hopefully well get out in the next week or so. My buddy who wanted to hunt sheep postponed till next friday, might be taking it pig hunting during the week tho.
