Walmart I'm guessing?

You'll be hard pressed to find a new one cheaper, not saying you couldn't but you'd be hard pressed to do so.

A friend of mine recently bought a NIB stainless one at a gun show for 210.00 out the door. I'd like to find one at that price myself.

Decent price. If you like the "Chops" of the 10/22, go get it...

now

not tomorrow

now

(just joking.. :D  :D  I do like the 10/22's, though) That is a decent buy for a new Ruger

Decent price..

HOWEVER, if you're going to customized it down the road. You may want to think about picking up a used one from the pawn shop.

The new 10/22 now have a plastic trigger group, plastic barrel band and the hammer is one piece design instead of 3 pieces(hammer, 2 hammer bushing). You can do a trigger job with a plastic TG, but no one knows the longevity at this point.

I don't see any reason to think a plastic trigger assembly in a Ruger 10/22 will wear out any sooner than the plastic trigger assembly in a Glock, or an XD. Pretty much the same stuff it seems to me.

$193 is about the going price 'round here. I don't even see used ones much cheaper. You might find one, but you'll burn up enough gas to make up for it.

Just out of curisouty sake, what else is close if not better "bang for your buck?"

What mods should i get? and clip? looking for a 20-30 round clip the more compact the better.

Just saw one in the local Wally-World for $238.12 last Monday. The tag said Ruger 10/22 so it wasn't mispriced which they some times do. This was the regular wood stocked 10/22. I was in Academy Sports Wednesday and inquired about the price of a 10/22. The regular wood stocked carbine is $181.00.

What mods should i get?

A loaded question...

20-30 round magazines are long. No way around it.

I'm someone who had a 10/22 and sold it to buy the less-expensive Marlin 60. And I'm happy with the 60, which I wasn't with the 10/22. People say I'd love the 10/22 if I just added X, Y and Z to it, but my response is, if I wanted a .22 for $500 or more, I'd get something else. The Marlin feeds and ejects mroe reliably, locks open on the last shot ($50 add-on for the 10/22), has scope-ready stock geometry, doesn't have a separate scope mount that comes loose, and shoots more accurately.

OTOH if you want a long-term project, the 10/22 is a helluva platform to play with.

I have to agree that the 10/22 is a picky SOB when it comes to what kind of ammo you feed it, what magazines you use, and how you clean/lube it. Also the factory trigger feels like dragging a rock across a cheese graater.

I finally found a mag/ammo combination that works great in mine, remington golden bullets and tactical innovations 25rd magazines are the ticket for mine. I also just installed a volquartsen hammer and it made an amazing improvement in pull and break - but won't get to shoot it until Sunday to see how it feels with live rounds...

The $193 ones at Walmart are the wood "carbine" model, the $238 is the "all-weather", synthic stock and SS barrell. I bought one of the the $193 walmart ones last month, it had the plastic trigger but the hammer was the standard nut design. The plastic triggers are fine. The trigger pull is impossible to live with. I graded the hammer down with a metal file and sandpaper until it was very light. If you don't want to do this, the VQ hammer is $29.99 from midway. Its simple to install. If your not willing to file your hammer or buy the replacment to install yourself you should get the Marlin or something else. If you had to pay retail for the hammer and installation it just adds to much to the price, your probably looking at $40-50 and $25-50 in labor. They are about 7-8lbs out of the box. Everyone should have a ruger 10/22.

Exelent choice for a first .22lr

I think everyone should own a 10/22 in their collection.

But I think a better choice for a first gun would be any used bolt action Marlin, Savage, Remington, Winchester, Stevens, CZ, etc.

they way prices have been inflating

Aw hell, the Ruger has gone up 30 or 40 bucks in 5 years. I don't regret selling the POS.

What I regret is not buying a nice new walnut CZ .22 bolt gun when they were the same price that bottom-end 10/22s were. I've regretted that many times -- along with not getting a CZ-75 when it was $350 brand new.

Seriously, poppeye, if you get a 10/22, I hope it works great for you and you have a great time with it. I just think that there's so much exaggeration out there about how great the 10/22 is, you should know that not everyone in the world loves the things, in case you're still shopping around.:)

(Nothing against Ruger... I've paid more than 10/22 prices for each other Ruger I've bought -- 5 Rugers in the safe as of right now -- and I love every last one of 'em, even use one in competition. Just looked at a couple more at the store yesterday, though I'm not wanting to spend any money right now. I just wasn't thrilled with the 10/22 -- and I had the metal one.)

as good a price you'll find brand new. get it now bud. the price is only gonna go up. plus its a great gun. my favorite .22 by far. infact its my only gun i shoot weekly

Popeye;

Although not a semi-auto, the Savage MKII can be a very rewarding bolt action .22 to own. They are inexpensive, easy to improve, and nicely accurate. I'm not sure what one's selling for these days with the acu-trigger, but they're a very decent .22 for the buck.

That is a good price. The 10/22 is a Mr. Potato Gun with all of the accessories available. A very fun gun.

That's a good price for a new un modded gun. I have one for sale on gunbroker, with some great mods and it consistanly shoots 1/2 minute moa to 50 yards (haven't tried it further yet) for 275.00.

Then again I fully understand the joy of building your own. - The only way to go wrong with a 10/22 is to let it pass you buy for that price, or pay way to much for it.

Good luck -

Decent price, good quality, not as accurate as the bolt rifles of the same price. Stick with the Tactical Inc mags, only ones that are of good quality, second is the pre ban ramlines, 3'd are the steel lips butler creek. The worst ever are the modern ramlines.
Others to look at are the marlin 60, 795, savage mk2, 64, mossberg plinkster.

Buy it, shoot it, only upgrade it if you want to.

rem 597 that my kid got me for xmas this year is ten times the the gun my 10-22 is and i just bought that over priced jamer this spring and i paid $210 for the 10-22 both guns came with scopes monted on them but the rem 597 also came with a 30 round clip and it dosent jam with rem ammo. it coast my daughter $160 with a $20 rebait. the 10 round mag jams i never put more in it than 7 it shoots way tighter groups than the 10-22 at the indoor range where i play.is anyone as impressed with the rem 597 as i am? come on for the price $149
