I have a new Ruger 10-22 and have put around 1000 through it. Ever since I had it I get stove pipe shells when I try to do rapid fire. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?
Thanx.

There is another website that has a section on 1022. You can go there and read up on the problems. Rimfirecentral.com:)

Yup, the guys at rimfire are a great group.

The first thing to do is try a different brand of ammo. The second would be to try a new extractor. Google 10-22 extractor and you will get a whole bunch of hits. They are cheap and easy to replace.

what ammo are you shooting? they function best on high speed .22.. remington thunderbolts work well.. as do cci minimags, stingers, and velocitors.

It's been a while since I've bought a new 10/22. Ruger used to apply a preservative to several internal parts of the 10/22 at the factory. Most people mistakenly think this is a lube. Clean your 10/22 thoroughly and apply a quality lube and it'll run much better. As for extractors, being a direct blowback firearm, I don't believe it has any bearing on your problem. You can remove your extractor and it'll run just fine without it. The only time the extractor comes into play is removing unfired cartridges from the chamber. Especially with a Bentz or target chamber. Just a thought.

I second what submin said.

Also, you said yours was new. The crinkle paint can flake off and get the inside dirty...there may be some overpsray of the paint inside the reciever. Clean it real good before you do anything else. It worked for me.

Try CCI mini mags and see if it wil run them. The tend to shoot for me reliably and there clean. By a brick before you go to smitty.
