Both rifles were made in the last three years. Quality is OK by me.

I've owned Remington and Ruger. Of the 2 I prefer Remington. The Rugers I've owned were just not as accurate as I felt they should be. The last Ruger was a target model that just didn't produce decent enough accuracy to my liking.

Remington may not be very accurate from the factory with a lower end rifle though their high end rifles will be. But, you can change the stock on a lower priced Remington or spend money on bedding and it will shoot.

The Savages seem to be a little harder to make accurate. Other then that they still make a decent rifle.

Remington misfires? I've owned Remingtons since 1978 and have never had a problem. One of the good or bad thing about the Remington rifles is the triggers were adjustable. I chose to have a gunsmith do mine which is probably why I never had a problem. The trigger work consisted of not only making the pull lighter but stoning and honing the internals. The average person adjusting their trigger is taking a chance that everything will work correctly. I don't put any faith to problems with Remington triggers that have been untouched or done correctly by someone in the know.

As would I. Though I'd get it in 375H&H
^this^ I got a new Model 70 in 375 H&H in August, what a wonderful rifle. Also its a tack driver, and I killed a huge moose with it @ 390yds +or- a couple.
But I own many Ruger M77's and would buy Ruger before Remington anyday. The CRF is a huge plus in my book where I may run into dangerous game anytime I leave my front door.

Both are quality rifles. I have shot Remingtons. I own a Ruger M77, but not because I necessarily like them better. It's what I found a good deal on when I was in the market. I am perfectly satisfied with the rifle though. I love it. Handle both and get the one that fits you the best.

Of the two, I'd go Ruger. I'm a bit burnt of RemMar... right now. I've got a few older ones. But no more new ones for me.

However, if the field is wide open but restricted to new - I'd go with Tikka T3 Hunter as my first choice. Maybe a Browning as my second, then where you are as third.

Don't get me wrong, I like Rugger. But if I were looking for an 06 in Ruger dress, I (personally) would be looking for a "thumb safety" older model, so classy and such a nice feature, but that's just me :)

I'd also be looking for a Charles Daily (commercial Mauser action), but that's also just me.

And, of course if the right Winchester M70 came along, I'd be all over that in heart beat. But it would have to be the right rifle :)

When I start consistently hearing good things about Remington again, I'll consider Remington rifles. Until then, they're out for me.

I had to pick a rifle recently, and it was between the Ruger M77 and Browning A-Bolt. What I actually ended up settling on was the Winchester M70. Read about that experience here.

Unless that second rifle comes back from Winchester in a reasonably short amount of time, I'll probably end up buying a Browning X-Bolt Hunter. I'm considering doing it anyway, because now I'm worried that the broken safety on the M70 might be a design flaw.

To be fair, I have two family members and one friend who all own Ruger M77 rifles, and they all love them. However, even the newest of those three particular rifles was made in 1998 or so, so there may be a difference in quality.

I love my M77. Haven't had any issues with it. That being said, my father-in-law has an older Rem 700 Mountain Rifle that is very nice too. I don't have any experience with the new remingtons, but the older ones I've fired have all been very nice. I still have to vote for the Ruger though.:D

if you send the 1" rings back to Ruger they will send you the required ring diameter and height that you need for no additional cost

Yep. I put a 3-9x50 on my M77 and had to get the higher rings. I sent the supplied ones back to Ruger with a note requesting the change and they sent me what I needed. So I don't see the ring mounts as an issue.

Among other things, I prefer the one-piece bolt of the Ruger (as opposed to having a separate handle brazed/welded on as in the Remington rifle) and a three-position safety (as opposed to the two-position safety as found on the Remington rifle). But that's just my opinion.

Ive always had remington, but came across a M77 MkII 7 mag in a trade....that thing is smooooooth, and the fit and finish in superior in every way than the remingtons I had....then again, I was shooting ADLs...but I still liked the finish better than the BDLs Ive handled.

Interesting the Ruger is in the lead. I'd choose either Winchester, Remington or Savage. I've owned Ruger and just haven't been happy with the accuracy.

And I don't buy into Remington having trigger problems. I will buy into someone worked on the trigger and made it unsafe.

I bought the new Model 70 Super Grade. If I hadn't purchased that, I would have gone with the new generation of Weatherby Vanguard. I'm not informed enough about Ruger to give proper opinion of it. I simply am bothered by proprietary anything, such as Weatherby's magnum ammo, or CZ's, Ruger's and Sako's rings.

You can buy rings to fit a Ruger made by Leupold and possibly others. Hornady loads ammo for most of the Weatherby cartridges.

People discussing the accuracy issues...how bad are we talking? Not being able to hit vitals of a deer at 300 yards or something that most people would love to have kind of accurate, but never actually need?

Id trade a little accuracy loss from my 700 for the upgrade in fit, finish, and overall quality of the ruger.

Saying Rugers are innacurate is like saying savages are Always more accurate...they are devices made by machines...there will always be outliers on both ends that escape the assembly line

That said, every ruger i have owned (5 m77s and a No.1) have been quite accurate. Judging a sporter weight bolt gun by five shot groups is an un fair test (needlessly over heating the barrel)...the true test of a hunting rifle is can it consistently place a single, one, uno, 1 bullet from a cold bore at any given time, exactly where i want it. Single hole groups are less interesting to me than single shots dead nuts in the right spot. Thats something my Rugers excell at

I prefer my bolts to not be soldered togeather from an assortment of pieces

I prefer my action to not be a machined out chunk of pipe

I like my safety to have three positions and be mounted on the bolt

Yes make mine a ruger.

And since we're showing groups these are from my box stock M77MKII rugers

My vote is for Remington. My main hunting rifles are both remington 700s. An older .30-06 and a new .270 both CDLs. Good fit and finish. Both group plenty tight for a hunting rifle, a bit better accuracy out of the .270 likely due to lighter recoil. My experience with Ruger is with their revolvers. no complaints. Both companies produce a good quality and reliable product in my experience, hard to go wrong with either.

The build quality and accuracy of my Ruger 77 Hawkeyes is uniformly excellent, and I favor them above the Rem700 by a considerable amount.
