Ruger Alaskan

MrFox, from your description I will definitely consider Simply Rugged,as fancy is not necessary.

RugerDoug, I have two dogs that accompany me everywhere on my property so the Ruger in a comfortable holster would be welcome. Due to some serious back problems I can no longer do any serious hiking, even though the AT is at my doorstep.

Rogertc1, For the past several months I have been thinning out my handguns to only a couple of 1911s and only 45ACP ammo, so that's the reason for the 45 Alaskan. And thanks for the picture.

harmonic, the list is appreciated, even if it will take a couple of months to go through it.

You need to buy a holster the way we all do. Get a big box, then just start buying holsters for no rhyme nor reason, and throw them into the box. That's what the rest of us do.

harmonic: Funny but accurate statement.

So far, through research, I only have successful and useful holsters. I took it as a hint when on almost every thread about holsters someone brings up Simply Rugged.

I forgot to mention how tight the holsters are. I can shake and shake as much as I want, and my detective special knock off won't fall out. It holds the gun high and tight with a good belt when carrying.

They might even have something already made laying around, send them an email to find out.

Saw one on an auction for $600 tonite. Claiming LNIB w/less than 100 rds fired

I also have a Ruger Alaskan in .44M and I enjoy the heck out of it. I don't find the recoil or muzzle flash to be much more than a 4" .44. I carry it in a Simply Rugged and it is comfortable for the hiking trips I take AND it is easier to conceal than a 4", at least for me, your milage may vary.
The Hogue grips that come it are designed for recoil and they work and work well, but they are bulky. I changed to the older style Letts grips and I find them just as easy on recoil and much less bulky when carried.
Ruger now has them on their on-line store, but you will need the placement pin also. The pin that comes with the Hogues will not work. If you order the grips from Ruger, also order the pin.
The Alaskan is one of the guns that you like or you don't and it's not for everybody. I happen to like mine and I find it to be well made and does the job I intend for it to do.

The ole "box-a-holsters", done that when I was younger, but less money, older, wiser,(well maybe not wiser) I am more careful on my purchases.

But man, you guys are pressuring me to buy that Simply Rugged!

batmann, thanks for that, I will check out the Letts grips.

dairycreek, now that's a holster!! That is so cool (with the bullet loops) I wouldn't want to conceal it.

"I have never shot an Alaskan and was wondering what, those of you with experience with this gun, your general impressions/opinions might be.
If ya hit em in the heart, they die just like anybody else.

Big Bill, How about it's handling characteristics; balance, weight, recoil with the different calibers, ergonomics. Also, overall quality? enjoy shooting it?
