I am looking at eventually getting one of these for a three to six hundred yard range gun and possibly for the wife to use for deer and elk (not out to 600 of course). How is the recoil and accuracy? What bullet weights does it prefer? I would be handloading for it.

Michael Bane likes the cartridge. In a pod cast he did around Memorial Day give or take a week, I think he spent 20 min or so talking about it on his podcast.

I own a few firearms and nice ones....if I was gonna get one in a cartridge like the 6.5, it would not be in a budget rifle like the American...I love Rugers and own quite a few but a low end rifle for the 6.5 just don't make sense to me.

I have no interest in the Ruger American either , however I can sure see it for the budget limited folks or in a limited use role . The op was in part about the accuracy of the platform and that I could speak to at least from one completely stock sample. The rifle didn't interest me enough to even fire a round through it so i cannot speak to recoil or how it handles , and could only say this one seems to work far above its price point with factory ammo accuracy wise .

Glad i could help . I think it will make a fine little rifle as long as a person remembers it is what it is .. and entry or budget level rifle that may well not be all that refined as far as finish goes .

I don't follow that idea. The Creedmoor may be marketed like a long range paper puncher but the potential is there to be a great hunting round (in line with grandfather Swede). Local shelf has Hornady GMX and SST factory ammo too. If someone wants a 6.5 rifle, the American is a decent option for the budget conscious. Maybe less sales potential than a .270 or .30-06, but that is more about the overwhelming popularity of those rounds and the Creedmoor looking for a foothold.
