I had a standard RAR in 300aac and it shot very well. I've considered getting another in 7.62x39, but if I wanted a bolt gun .223 I'd seriously consider the RAR.

Ruger is offering several versions of the American rifle that take AR mags in 5.56, 6.5 Grendel and I think 300 BA. The 7.62X39 rifles take the Mini-30 magazines.

In addition they offer 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor rifles that use Accuracy International magazines.

I tried to purchase just the stock to convert my older 308 Predator to use AI magazines, but Ruger said no. I just bought a new 308 Predator that takes the mags. It will go to the range tomorrow. If it shoots good the older version will be for sale and I'll also buy one in 223.

I saw a conversion process somwhere online; I want one in .223 to replace/upgrade the Axis I traded to my son.
I'l be searching for that. After my suppressor gets out of jail and I've had the opportunity to try the rifle with it to determine if I'm even keeping it.

I tried to purchase just the stock to convert my older 308 Predator to use AI magazines, but Ruger said no.

To be clear, did Ruger say no because it wouldn’t fit or no based on something else? I have the new style Predator in 6.5 CM that takes AI mags and cannot find an aftermarket stock to chop for a shorter LOP. I’m hoping against hope that the Magpul will fit but it doesn’t appear to (I’ll be calling later).

I imagine that stocks for the new rifles will be out before long. The detachable AR/AI mags is sure to make them even more popular.

I just find it nearly inconceivable that Ruger redesigned the entire receiver in order to change the magazine system. If they had, surely they would not have covered the second action screw under the mag release and would have opted to move it behind the trigger I’m going to try heading to an LGS to measure C to C on the action screws vs the new design.

I called both Ruger and Magpul to get some insight on replacement stocks and I’m not sure either person I talked to had much product knowledge. Ruger said my action wouldn’t fit the old stock style (rotary magazine) even if I bought a rotary mag. Magpul said mine should fit but he measured C to C at approx. 6 1/2” and looking at pictures online there is no way the RAR measures that far between screws. Most likely he measured the wrong stock, mine came out to 4 1/8”.

I toyed with the idea of a bolt in .223 last summer, I think. I even started a thread here. With the Ruger deciding to give the option of AR mags I'm glad I waited. I would opt for the Predator but i am sure the Ranch shoots well, and the AR mag is icing on the cake.

I posted this in a separate thread I started but this is what I got from Magpul yesterday via email, their stock ships with a magazine. I also measured both my Predator and a Ranch at Field & Stream and the actions are indeed the same. So if you buy a rotary mag style you can swap the stock and magazine assuming you can find a new one for sale.

jmr, I’d scour eBay for a take-off stock if I were you. I saw the older style (rotary) on there yesterday for $8.50.
