Ruger Guide Gun in 30 O6 or Ruger Scout rifle in 308? Use of the rifle will be deer inside 300 yards mostly inside 100 yards and mostly inside 50 yards if I were to be honest. Is one rifle a better build than the other. I do already shoot 308 in a Ruger American. This rifle would probably replace my Ruger American if I like it more. Either way I would sell off one either the new one or the American.

I think 308 will do for you. The only advantage 30-06 has is with heavier bullets IMO. Plenty of less expensive 308 around for practice with that caliber.

The guide gun is weighted to help with the recoil of the 375/416 Ruger, so it's a full pound heavier than the scout rifle (8.1 pounds vs 7.1 pounds). Personally I'm OK with heavy rifles, but that's one consideration.

Good point on lbs. Caliber isn't really the concern it's the particular rifle. I haven't had and experience with the Guide Gun and I don't know anybody that has either. I have shot a Ruger Scout once it seemed to handle fine but it was a few years ago and it was only a few shots.

308 and I second the question, what's wrong with your American? Those are great guns. Having said that, the Ruger Scout is a great gun too and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I have a GSR in 308 with synthetic stock. I put the XS full length rail with a non scout 3x9 scope. Its light, has a pretty good trigger, excellent muzzle break and good accuracy. Who could ask for more?

Neither. The American you have is a better option. I'd recommend 308, or any of the 308 based cartridges such as 243, 7-08, 260, or even the 6.5 Creedmoor. But in a different rifle. The 2 you are considering are on opposite ends of the spectrum and are special purpose guns rather than good all around options. The Guide gun is too heavy and bulky, especially in 30-06. The Scout rifle would be closer to meeting your needs.

If you want a rifle more aesthetically appealing than the American there are many other options.

Ruger Guide Gun in 30 O6 or Ruger Scout rifle in 308? . . . I do already shoot 308 in a Ruger American. This rifle would probably replace my Ruger American if I like it more. Either way I would sell off one either the new one or the American.

It sounds like you are a Ruger fan.

Since you mention that out of what you buy, and the American you already have, that one would get sold . . . then logic would seem to stay with the .308 cartridge. Buying the .30-06 will leave you with ammo for one gun you don't keep. Of course, logic don't mean squat sometimes. :D

Anyway, if you go with the Ruger GSR do you want it to be light with the synthetic stock like you already have, or do you really want something more traditional? Because that's what the GSR and the Guide Gun are in terms of construction. I'm thinking to be really more different than the American you may be wanting a GSR in stainless and a wood stock.

Maybe this if you can find one, but the barrel is a short 16.1". http://ruger.com/products/gunsiteScoutRifle/specSheets/6804.html

Or maybe this if you don't mind a laminate stock as it has a 18.7" barrel. http://ruger.com/products/gunsiteScoutRifle/specSheets/6822.html

The two are pretty differently styled rifles. I prefer the utility of the Guide Gun over the Scout Rifle, but my GG's are in the larger, magnum cartridges, and I wouldn't have interest in one specifically in 30-06 (although I do own multiple M77 Mark II's and Hawkeye's in 30-06). For short range deer hunting like you've described, the Scout rifle is likely the better choice, shorter and lighter, but still with plenty of range and power. For hunting, a flush belly mag would be nice, but the extra weight of the GG isn't an advantage.

Kinda funny to see recommendations against a 20" .30-06 in the same thread recommending a 16" or 18" 308win...

A one pound lighter Guide Gun in .308 sure would be nice, IMO. :)

So I bought a guide gun in 30-06. Awesome. New plan I'm gonna sell off an Enfield in 303 *real Jungle Carbine. I never shoot it and instead of 303 I will have to buy 30-06. The guide gun is so nice I was about to walk out with a savage Scout and saw the guide gun and one led to another as they say. It's the nicest hunting rifle I have bought. Just can't decide if I'm going to keep it iron sights or mount a scope on it. I mounted a spare vx-1 3 by 9 to see what it looks like and it looks good. But the sights are pretty slick for close in deer hunting that I'm going to be using it at

The guide is definitely a want just so freakin slick-looking. And the weight shouldn't be much of an issue it's it's heavy but it isn't a block it handles very nice points quick and being as heavy as it is recoil should be pretty mild. The scope dilemma... Good problem to have. Irons are great on this rifle imho but it looks great with a scope.

Boom. Recoil is nill. Anyone leaning towards one, I suggest it. I mounted a vx-1 3-9 for now on it I picked up refurbished on Midway while back just to get it in motion for deer season. It's definitely not for backpacking but from truck to tree stand is fine. I gotta figure out how to post pics.

Invest in a nice set of qr rings such as warne quick release rings. Take advantage of having those open sights and using an optic.by the sounds of it a 2-7 scope would be more than enough mag for your hunting. Sounds much like were I hunt. My brother has the 2-7 vxr on his guide gun. Slick setup. I have a 2.5-8 vx3i on my tikka and like it alot. The 1.75-6 leupold may be a good option for you too. Enjoy!
