What would you chose for a hunting rifle? Ruger Scout .308 or the Remington VS "Varmint Special" in .308 which would you chose for a hunting rifle?
I have knuckled it down to a .308 rifle, I have a new Ruger Scout, but looking at a used Rem VS with a 26" barrel.

Neither. Since it's a 308, I'm going to assume that you're hunting deer or similar. The RGS is close, but it's pretty heavy for a 308 and the magazine sticks out in just the wrong place for easy carry. The Remington Varmint Special is way too heavy, barrel is too long for any carry.

The way I hunt, I'd rather have a Remington Model 7.

Some description of what you're hunting and how you hunt it would help.

I wouldn't consider either. No point is putting yourself at that much of a disadvantage.

The standard Ruger Hawkeye is a better hunting rifle, and better scout rifle.

The model 7 is a good choice as would be most any other standard bolt rifle. I'm somewhat partial to Winchesters, but like Rugers too. No use for the GSR though.

The Ruger, it is easy to carry you quickly forget that its over the ideal Scout weight and very accurate. Lose the ten round magazine and use a three or five.
The Remington would only be preferable for hunting out of a blind along a sendaro or over a beanfield.

The Remington, I can get for $350 and in great shape, I could cut it down to 20" or just buy it and sell it for something better. I don't want to shoot the new RGS just yet. I will be hunting black bear, deer, elk, moose and yotes. The Rem Model 7 is a sweet gun, just real had to come by.

I have done real well hunting big game with a .223 single shot for many years, also have a single shot .308, it has a bit of a kick so I would like a bolt gun, I also love the Finn light but way out of my price range.

Ruger American

I own a Ruger scout and it shoots very well.

But it is heavier than I believe it needs be.

I saw a Ruger American LIGHTWEIGHT [ there are MANY models ] ata gun show a few weeks back,it made me sorry that I had the scout already.

It is a new production and will be out there for a while.

I would love one,and if I see one that is really reasonable = its mine.

If you can get the Remington for $350, buy it! You won't lose money, you can shoot it while you decide, and, if you don't like it, re-sell it or trade up.

Gun show today had a Ruger American in .308 lightweight for 349.00.

I do NOT need it,but almost bought it.

LOVE the weight issue. And it has a pretty thick shoulder pad too.
