My wimminfolk gave me a left-handed GSR for Christmas.
Being a devoted NON-fan of the forward-mounted scope sight, I had that rail removed about thirty seconds after opening the box. This means that my scope will be mounted on the receiver. Recent medical events have affected my eyesight, so any use of the irons will truly be EMERGENCY use.
I intend to zero the iron sight with my service load, then remove it and stash it inside the buttplate assembly with an easy-access wrench close by for buttplate removal if needed. There is ample room to allow stowage there with minor modification.
In this way I will have the iron sight available on a couple minutes' notice if the scope becomes disabled. I must say that, in using scopes in the hunting fields for over forty years including many seasons in sub-zero Arctic conditions, I've never had a scope casualty. BUT.....Murphy is alive and well, so who knows?
That ugly Ruger flash-hider will also disappear, to be replaced with a British L1A1 model from their FAL-type rifle. I did this switch on my "Deluxe" Mini-14, and it's MUCH better-looking, and a better flash-hider in the bargain.
This GSR is an impressive piece of work. I'm hoping mine lives up to reports I've seen in various places on the Internet.
