Hi All,

I handled a Ruger Alaskan Hawkeye rifle (http://www.ruger.com/hawkeye375/index.html) at a local shop this past week and I really liked it. I especially liked ththe Hogue stock and the iron sights that were on this gun.

I am thinking about buying a Ruger M77 or Remington 700 Bolt rifle (not the Ruger Alaskan Hawkeye). I would like to have this style of iron sights installed on my new rifle. Is this a straight forward task for a competent gunsmith?

I would like to have the option of having iron sights on my new gun, in addition to using a scope.

Thanks in advance.

Ruger used to (until a couple years ago) offer all its 77's with or without irons, in the catalog.

Call them up and ask if you can order one with sights, especially if you like the ones on the Alaskan.

Remington shipped sights on the M7 until a couple years ago, also.

Weatherby adds a pretty penny if you want sights, but they will sell you a rifle with sights on it, too. For all I know, other companies also add a significant amount to the price. But it can't hurt to ask.:)

That said, I got the Warne base and QD ring set for my Weatherby, and for the price of adding a set of irons, I can carry a decent second scope. The QD rings really do go on and off in seconds without tools, and return to zero.

So it depends if you really want iron sights specifically, or if you are just looking for a backup to the scope.

Thanks jerkface (great screen name!) and ArmedBear for your posts. I did some more research and found some additional options.

I think the Alaskan has a Marble style sight (http://www.marblearms.com/sights/universal.html). I think I'm going to go with this type of sight and the gold dot front sight (in the spirit of Ed McGivern). I just would like some iron sights that I can use for plinking at 100 yards or so.

I'll give Ruger a call to see if I can get a M77 with a set of irons on them. If not, I know a good local smith who should be able to stick them on.

Thanks again!

If you have sights put on a rifle be prepared to buy at least one wrong front sight. Unless you get lucky and get the right height one on the first try. However once you buy one wrong one you can google up a formula that will tell you how much taller or shorter it needs to be.

Thanks again for the tips. I guess getting iron sights would be an iterative process, unless I can get them installed at the factory.

But what factory puts GOOD iron sights on anything?

The irons Ruger puts on the Hawkeye rifles seem to be pretty good express-style sights. CZ puts decent sights on some of their rifles. Blaser offers good iron sights as an option.

NECG is offering some new sight options for CZ rifles.
