What to do?

The little Ruger Hawkeye Compact has caught my eye, but I would prefer a threaded barrel for options of a flash hider, suppressor, or muzzle break. Really would like the simple option if adding an A2 flash hider. My understanding is the lightweight contour barrel is not ideal for threading, so I am unsure what the options are, if any. I have heard some talk about barrel threading (instead of muzzle threading) and screwing on an over-barrel muzzle device? Seems strange and complex but any ideas are welcome.

Barrel threading - rather than muzzle threading - really isn’t a thing. Either way, you’re threading the muzzle end of the barrel, so it’s still cutting threads on the muzzle end. Either way you say it, it’s the same thing.

What I THINK you’re trying to describe, however, is a muzzle thread strategy like black-pipe, such the end of the muzzle would butt against the inside of the brake, rather than the end of the brake butting against the shoulder of the barrel. I’ve never seen this done, and wouldn’t personally do it.

I’ve seen reports that the Ruger M77 Hawkeye Compact muzzle is only just over 1/2”, which would be right at the minimum dia to have the major dia of 1/2”-28 threads which could be used for .223/5.56, with no room for truing the threads to the bore. Some smiths do thread LONG muzzle tenons and then epoxy flared nuts to transition from the undersized barrel contour to a necessary thickness for shouldering a muzzle device, but it’s not an ideal solution either.

If you’re considering a Hawkeye Compact in anything larger than .223/5.56, any cartridge which would need 5/8-24 threads for the muzzle device, then I think you’re SOL. Yes, a long threaded muzzle tenon with a glued adapter could be done, but it’s kinda like holding on your bumper with a ratchet strap.

There do exist clamp on brake options, like those from Witt Machine. This might be a suitable solution.

ETA: not a chance I would go through this much hassle to engineer a compromised solution just for a flash hider.
