Ruger Hawkeye issue

I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye chambered in .223. It's a great rifle that shoots well and is also a good looking firearm. It's been as reliable as a bolt action rifle can be until yesterday my son and I were taking turns shooting offhand at steel targets. I was shooting it and upon chambering a fresh round and attempting to fire the trigger was dead it went back like it should fire but no dice. I ejected the live round and attempted to fire it again. It appeared the bolt was cocked but no matter how many time I rolled the safety on and off it wasn't firing. I pulled the bolt everything appeared normal I pulled the barrel/action out of the stock the 3 position safety was working as it should. Only after pulling the firing pin out of the bolt and reassembling did the rifle operate properly and would fire again. I am somewhat trouble by this and that I can't figure out the original issue, anyone have any similar issues?

Was the cocking piece showing "cocked"

The safety selector should be in the“Load-Unload” position when the bolt is being removed or installed.

Do the Function check thats listed in manual.

The LC6 trigger doesnt seem to be adjustable, may rule it out as an issue?

The sear needed to move freely. Clean action of any old oil or grease.

Based on the described malfunction and remedy, you had something in the FP bore in the bolt. Either a chunk or gunk.

Do you lubricate your bolt freely?

I don't regularly oil it unless I am giving it a cleaning after a range session it's really a truck gun that rides in a soft sided case and gets shot mostly at coyotes and groundhogs. Do you normally give a shot of Rem oil in the slots on the bolt or do you remove the firing pin and lubricate directly?

The heavy oil mostly slows the firing pin velocity, causing a misfire. The primer most times shows contact from the pin. I would never use Rem oil or Break Free CLP in a firing pin channel, unless all excess is wiped off.
I use WD40.( Plz, no debate on WD40 Ty.) :)

A blanked primer? The litte primer disc may go into the firing pin channel and interfere with pin travel.

attempting to fire the trigger was dead it went back like it should fire but no dice.
Possibly an anomaly. A 1 time thing where trigger disengaged from the sear, some how, if even possible?
How else could it happen when the cocking piece is showing
cocked (protruding from the rear of the bolt sleeve)? Strange.

Keep using gun, see if it happens again.

I fired it maybe 25 times last night it ran just like it should. I appreciate your tips gentlemen.
