Oh, Baby!

Nice.... now I want one..... and that, after thinking there was just no way I needed another handgun.

That looks like a pretty solid piece - I almost wonder if they'd considered chambering it for .454 Casull, since Ruger builds 'em like tanks anyway. No point in stuffing that one with wimpy 'cowboy action' lead reloads, huh?

You're really gonna like it! It's a hoot, especially if you reload.

I hope so and yes, I do reload. I'm going to try H-110 powder with a 250 and/or 300 grain Hornady XTP JHP bullet. I've been reading John Linebaugh's web site all about the .45 Colt ... good stuff!!

Ruger offers the Super Redhawk in .454 Casull ... it's 2oz lighter than the Redhawk I've ordered despite only having a 2-1/2" barrel.

I'm working up a load with a 405 gr cast 45/70 bullet sized to .451. I hope to get 900 fps with it.

I also cast 310 and 325 gr bullets, too. A 310 @ 1200fps is easier on your hand than a similar load in a 629.

VA27, out of interest, do you agree with John Linebaugh's comments that cast bullets work a lot better in .45 Colt revolvers and his statement "I much prefer cast slugs of 260 gr or heavier. Do not depend on this JHP slug or any other bullet of this design to give deep penetration. No matter how heavy it is."

His favorite big game/dangerous game load is 24 grains of H-110 with a 310/320 cast bullet moving at 1250 fps. This is the kind of load I'm interested in but I thought that jacketed bullets such as the Hornady 300 grain XTP performed better on game compared to cast bullets.

Thanks.
:)

That's a nice revolver. I was looking at that revolver for a while until I found a really nice "old" Vaquero chambered in 45 Colt. I still might get one sometime in the future.

Don't forget the range report... (and pics of course)

The Redhawk arrived at the gun shop yesterday so I was able to "visit" it this morning. It'll be two weeks before I can pick it up but in the meantime here are some first impressions.

1. This thing is a BEAST!!
2. The grip is on the fat side but it feels good.
3. It looks/feels like a hand canon with the 4" barrel and there's A LOT of metal in the frame.
4. The DA pull feels better (more positive) than the SA pull. (Strange but good too).
5. Ruger's quality control = CRAP given all the scratches on the satin finish. :cuss: (I'll have to buff those out I guess)
6. Revolver has obviously been shot (at the factory ) and not cleaned well after firing.
7. Cylinder doesn't feel particularly tight in the frame ... sort of rattles a bit.
8. Cylinder release is a bit "sticky" but maybe that'll improve with use.
9. I would feel VERY well armed carrying this thing around on hunting/camping/hiking trips.
10. As someone said, you could pistol whip a moose with this thing!!
11. All in all the revolver exceeds my expectations in terms of appearance, feel and the DA trigger but Ruger (or RugerPistols.com) could learn a thing or two from USFA in terms of final product qualilty. Scratches like that on the frame, and what appears to be polishing compound in every nook and cranny, just isn't acceptable these days.

A full report (with photos) will follow in a couple of weeks.

:)

I have the full sized(7.5" barrel) version which they don't make anymore. Love the beast had the chamber mouths opened up as they were a bit tight. Only complaint they used a different style ejector star,I like the ones they used in the 357 and 44 Redhawks.

This one appears to have a very large ejector star ... I'm not familiar with Ruger revolvers so don't know if this is unusual or specific to the Redhawk line.

Why do you have to wait 2 weeks to pick up your revolver?

ArchAngelCD, in this great state here's what we have to do to buy a handgun.

1. Complete handgun safety course or hunter's education course (once only).
2. Go to gun shop, choose revolver/pistol that you want to buy. Gun shop faxes serial # to police station.
2. Go to police station to apply for handgun permit to buy that specific revolver/pistol.
3. Return to police station in 14 days to pick up purchasing permit.
4. Go back to gun shop to pick up revolver/pistol.
5. Take pistol back to police station to register it.

:cuss:

The stupid thing is, once you have a handgun, you have to go through the whole process again to buy another handgun. That said, you can buy as many handguns as you like on one permit so it's best to buy as many as possible at one time!

:)

My state, you produce the CCW license, fill out the fedforms and cash and carry with no phone call to the FBI....no CCW means the phone call, THEN cash and carry....you'll end up leaving the Redhawk home after shooting the Rodeos much....a 250gr SWC at 900-1000fps will go through a deer like it was made of hot cheese and air, and will penetrate over 3ft. of black bear....and be completely safe in a Rodeo, or new Colt, or old Colt....

PS...if you want an interesting paperweight, I have a Redhawk .45Colt cylinder/star/stainless for $35/delivered.
