Found my grandpas hunting rifle in the closet the other day. Nobody told me he liked to hunt, R.I.P., and I myself am really into guns and have a few already. I have not, however, shot a bolt action rifle using a scope in my life, only in the video games. So i took it out to the range and had a lot of fun. It's a ruger m77 mkII with a leupold 2X7 VARI x-II. like i said it was my first time, but I shot a half inch group at 100 yards and 1 1/2 group at 200.

i don't know anything about rifles so what is this rifle and scope set up capable of in terms of distance and accuracy? I had a lot of fun, btw it is a .270 winchester. thanks.

You have a good one it would seem . The .270 makes a thin skinned round and with the new loads and bullets will work on coyote to elk.

Sounds like a nice package. Pretty much, that 270 will be good for as far as you want to reasonably shoot. Its a rare Ruger that will shoot that well. As far as hunting...I will refrain from comment. I have no experience with the 270 as far as on-game performance.

I agree with all of the foregoing. You have a very nice set-up for about everything that roams around in North America. The Ruger 77 is my favorite bolt-action rifle. Sounds like your grandpa was a very savvy man.
