I put a 3-9 Nikon Buckmaster scope on my Ruger M77, placing the scope as far forward as the rings allow. Even with the scope as far forward as it can go, I still have 3-3/4" of scope behind the rear ring. Add another 3 to 4 inches for eye relief, and ths scope just sits too far back for good shooting.

Any ideas on a scope that will have the rearmost portion further forward using the existing rings?

Looks like that's the best you're going to get with that setup. If your not happy with it you can try a different scope with a shorter eyepiece or get a picatinny rail adapter for it so you can move it wherever you would like.

I cannot imagine shooting any gun with the scope that for forward. Nikons have fairly short eye relief anyway. I'd have trouble getting that scope far enough back without it hitting the front objective to use it properly.

Stop crawling up your stock. Assume a more natural position with your cheek back further

This is the answer. Your scope is way too far forward. You either have extremely long arms and the stock is too short for you or you have a technique problem.

Close your eyes put the gun up to your natural shooting position.Open your shooting eye ,move your scope back or forward until when you open your eye you see the whole picture.Waalah you have adjusted your eye relief.Use fine tune on eyepiece to tweek as needed........Don

I adjust all my scopes for an upright head position, if that scope were on my rifle it would have to move back.

All of my scopes are mounted with the front of the magnification knob about even with the trigger. That's on Savage, Remington and my M77 all are Nikon scopes with approximately the same size eye piece. This is where it feels most comfortable for shooting from any position.

Try squaring up on the rifle I a little more. Bring that right shoulder forward.

Thanks, all. Yeah, the scope sits very well for natural eye position while standing & kneeling (not that I would want to shoot hi power with this thing).

But most recently I've been shooting it from the bench at the local range while trying to work up a good load using IMR 4064 & some PRVI 150 gr FMJs. And I gather from the reading here that this has me hunched over and too far forward. Probably too low a table for me with the given seats; and I am hunching over without realizing it.

I had looked at that, but I'm concerned the extension rings I've seen on line would interfere with loading. I really got to hate the weaver(?) base on a Rem 660 I had a few years back for just that reason.

I'm not sure of the length behind the ring, but I've got a Vortex Diamondback on mine, and I have plenty of room.

Except for that one time I used a tree as an improvised rest and crawled up the stock. I still didn't get a bad bite - just enough to remind me not to do that.

Mine is a Hawkeye, but I'm pretty sure they're the same.

Without seeing how you're squared up on the rifle when you shoot, I can't comment on how far back your scope is. I have a 3-9x50 Redfield Revolution on my M77 and it's been great. My only hang-up was that I needed to order the extension rings because the bell of the objective lens was too long and wouldn't work with the standard straight rings. Probably wouldn't have that problem with a x40 though.

Thanks again, all. I'll give it another try this weekend if the wind behaves & stays below 15 MPH.

Ray I just went down to measure my ruger and it sets the same distance from the rings as yours.. From reading your views I think your right that your bench is far to low. If it works fine standing and kneeing and you have to move it forbench shooting your rifle will know all wrong when standing or kneeling. My shooting bench and the ones at our range are 36" high or 18" above the seat and I still have an adjustable front rest with about a 7" minimal height. 2 1/2" bag at the rear.

Now IF you just have to move it around and need a little more room to do so and have some weaver style rings handy go here-

Thanks, Hardluk; I've bookmarked that site just in case.

I've been shooting peep on rifle all these years, and only now that the eyeballs don't adjust as well as they used to am I converting over to scopes on my rifles. I'm finding out there is more technique involved than I expected.

With open sight I to can only see a recievers and globe front well any more. I have used scope since '76 and lit others side. Get your head where it feels just right standing or sitting with eyes closed then open them and have some one move it on a low power setting till you find a full view in the scope . You might have a 1/2" movement extra ether way . Then turn up the power to or near max and use that little bit of for and aft wiggle room to fine tune to where you want it.

Practice weak side shooting to. You never know when a deer could walk out where you least expect it to come from and you can get up and turn around.

I have always crowded a scope and little be to but find that 3 1/2" works just right for me. I day open sights good or bad will feel so odd to you and the scope will be just right.

Thanks again, Hardluk1. I'll try that & see if it changes my scope position. Then I'll try to adjust by bench position to suit the scope.

Learned the importance of that weak hand thing for sure a couple years back when I was in WA state. :)

picking the correct scope rings

how to find correct scope rings for burris 4.5X14 42 mm scope on Savage 10 rifle?

I just purchased a burris fullfield ii -- above listed measurements.

Should I get Leupold 1" high rings or medium rings?

sure your stock wasnt shortened or maybe its a youth model. If nothing else just have a thicker recoil pad put on it. If anything i usually have the oposite problem. It usualy takes extension bases to get it back far enough.

I think a higher comb would help. Try taping a rolled up dish towel on the stock and see if your head sits back a little further naturally. I like a higher comb on almost any gun with a scope.

Lloyd Smale: Stock looks uncut, but I'll measure the LOP & see for sure.

5inadime: Reall good thought! I'll make up some more .30-06 for this weekend, and try out that comb idea :)

Thanks, both!

Ray for what its worth mine is a first year SS mkII 77 that had the old boat paddle stock. It has had a Boyd's classic laminate on it for 17 years now and it has a 13 5/8" LOP with a short boyd's recoil pad and a high ring set on it. Probably the same profile as yours.

I think a fixed power scope would reduced that distance. Some scopes are longer in that dimensions than others. I read a web site about a similar situation on a cz.

Ruger M 77 223 rem

I have a ruger M77 223 rem I put a Nikon P223 4 by 12 by 40 rapid turrets and its a very good match ,zero at 100 yardsw and turn turret to 500 its dead on 2 1/2 inch group at 500 yards hand loads ..

Sorry guys, between weather and work, I just haven't had the opportunity to get out to the range to try out the advice above.
