I have a Ruger M77 not a Mark II and the stock has seen better days. I recently acquired it from a close friend's dad who passed away and the family wanted me to have it because I loaded his ammo for it. Anyway my question is does anybody know if the Mark II stocks will work with the M77 with tang safety?

The stocks are not interchangeable. And to my knowledge McMillian is the only aftermarket stock maker that offers one for the original 77.

Personally, I'd use it as is unless it were broken and unusable.

I know when I was shopping a 77/357 and was going to replace the plastic stock from the get go that Boyds makes one for the newer 77/357.

How rough is it? A refinished 77 stock would be a better accent to your rifle than a later replacement. Is it a red pad?
Unfortunately it has a crack running down the side just past the action screw. Worst case scenario I'll send it to someone that specializes in stock refinishing. It has sentimental value no matter what but I would like to take it out now and then and use it.

I will check with McMillan. The original has a crack so worse case I guess I could get it restored.

Thanks guys for all the responses. A friend has located an original M77 stock from a rifle that was rebarreled and attached to a synthetic stock. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Nice find. Good thing to check with putting another stock on the rifle is that when assembled, the front action screw does not touch the wood in its hole. And also check that you torque the action screws, most notably the front, to what Ruger recommends. The M77 Hawkeye requires a non-standard 95" lbs on the front, not 100% sure if the tang safety model calls for that too.
