I am seriously contemplating one of the Ruger M77 Mark II Compacts in stainless with a black laminated stock. Seems like a small, handy, lightweight rifle for woods hunting. My caliber of choice will be .308.

Anybody have any experience or input on this rifle?

Thanks!

I looked at these and really liked the feel. The only concern I had was the short tube giving up too much velocity?

If your load of choice checks out in the short barrel, I can't see how this would be a bad rifle. The other thing to think about, is that this is essentially the Ruger Frontier rifle without the scout scope mount set up. If the frontier is similar in price, you could get it and mount the scope either over the action or in the scout position.

I recently picked up the All-Weather Ultra Light chambered in .30-06, about 5 inches longer and half a pound heavier than the .308 you're looking at. I love carrying it, but I'm going to have to do some pretty serious recoil-management research: as I discovered yesterday when I put my first rounds through it, it kicks like a plow horse. No, that doesn't quite capture the way my shoulder feels today -- it kicks like two plow horses!

I have a Frontier in .308 and love it..

it is a great shooter and not too bad on the shoulder. I have the laminated stock, so the weight is not too light. I also added a SVL recoil pad. This lengthened the LOP and made the rifle a better fit for me. I also added a Timney trigger. I really like these triggers.

I say go for it. You will be pleased and have a handy little rifle.

I bought one of the Ruger compact rifles in 260 when they first came out.Mine is stainless with the laminated stock. My rifle has been great. It is one of the most accurate rifles that I have ever fired.Every load that I have tried have shot really tight groups. My 11 year old son now uses this rifle for his deer gun.

why would you be worried about the veolicty loss? Its short for a reason its a easy to handle short range hunting rifle. fully capable of making shots at decent ranges. I love mine it handles well and has decent accuracy i have a bushinell elite not to heavy, It gets the job done.

I haven't even sighted mine in yet, but it appears the model is now discontinued

I cannot say anything about the recoil yet. Mine is the 22" barrel MK II in 30-06.

Now you've got me thinking about a shoulder pad or recoil pad.

(and this is from the recent topic on the M1 Garand convervsion to 338. I know I'm a lame newbie, but you hafta start somewhere!)

"The 06 will propel a 180 grain bullet out of a standard length barrel at 2680 FPS."
