I have an older(1970's) M77 and just got a new scope that I want to mount up. The Ruger mount rail is pretty small and looks like the ring mounts are pretty specific. The new scope is a 30mm tube and the rail attachment is the size for a picatinny rail.

Any help or suggestions on how I can get this scope mounted on this rifle?

Thanks

Burris makes a ruger to weaver mount. It attaches into the Ruger milled receiver and just gives you a Weaver style base for use with just about any ring you want. 21WGQk9KD2L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Pikid89's suggestion of 30mm Ruger rings is the best if you don't need elevation offset for long range shooting. Ruger's own rings work well, even have good return-to-zero when removed and re-installed as an assembly with a scope.

I've read that specific Burris product has a tendancy to fail under recoil. Fastener issue, apparently the fasteners are MIM or something similar that is just too brittle. That made me lose interest in the Burris mount option.

For my Ruger 77MKII I went with the Farrell 20MOA base, but he also makes a standard 0MOA rail too. Both are Weaver/Picatinny slot system. Downside is that the receiver has to be drilled and tapped for installation. Don't know if his products will fit the older M77. I'm sure he'll tell you if you contacted him.

Thanks for the help folks. I was so disappointed when I found out it wouldnt mount. I will have to see what i can come up with.

Thanks again

I used the burris bases on a Super Red Hawk .454 casull and a Mini-14 ranch both held up just fine. The action on the mini and the recoil of the .454 should be a pretty good abuse test.

The adapter that converts the Ruger base to Weaver/Picatinny rail will make your scope sit a bit higher I believe. May affect good cheek weld on the stock. I'd go with factory 30 mm rings of the correct height for your scopes objective. Ruger should be able to provide the correct rings.

I just scanned the Brownells link. I'm not sure. I thought Ruger bases/rings were different than CZ. One thing that comes to mind, on factory Ruger rings, at least my older M-77's, they use two different heights of rings per gun, taller in the rear, shorter in the front, in matched pairs for the height range (low medium or high). You can check with Brownells tech guys and see if the rings in your link work with your gun/scope combination regarding height to clear the scope objective and barrel.

Look in Brownells factory parts section also, the Factory Ruger 30mm rings may be good. I like the factory rings, but I use 1" scopes. Don't have any experience with their 30mm rings. If you dont have a Brownells catalog, I'd suggest aquiring one. I think their online catalog is nowhere near as easy to use as their real catalog. I simply can't find things in their online catalog that show up and are easy to locate in the paper catalog.

Thanks for the information Malamute. I will check with Brownells, and I will also see if I can get one of there catalogs. I will also contact Ruger on Monday and see what they have to say.

Thanks so much for all the help.
