I got a Ruger 22/45 LITE recently and the trigger is not so good. I have a Mark III Hunter and the trigger is pretty good, much better than the LITE.

I lightly polished the mating faces of the sear and trigger (I've done this many times before and always do safety checks before firing) and though it improved the trigger, the gun will now fire when I turn the safety off if the trigger was pulled while the safety was on. I looked at the parts and the safety is VERY POORLY designed, it allows more than half of the sear to move off the notch when activated... I now can't use the gun until I get new parts, if anyone had stock parts (mostly a hammer, but maybe a sear too) they're willing to part with, I'd be very happy to take them off your hands.

I am looking at getting some Volquartsen parts to improve the trigger. The kit is $110 and that's a bit excessive. What should improve the trigger more? The sear or the hammer?

the sear and spring make the most difference. The hammer only reduces lock-time, which is basically imperceptible.

Personally, if you have already taken material off the existing parts you have changed the angles ever so slightly. I have owned a half dozen Ruger MKII and III's and never had any issues with the safety. This tells me you should replace the parts with new ones from VQ.

I would get the VQ sear, bushing, and trigger. This will allow you to rid yourself of the mag disconnect which will further improve your guns trigger, and you will start out with the best possible machine cut and fitted set of innards.

If you're going to remove the magazine disconnect, I recommend a BAM bushing over the VQ part.

VQ sear, remove mag disconnecter and replace with Clark/sam lam/MKII hammer bushing. I installed VQ trigger also. Completely transformed the pistol.

I replaced the stock sear and trigger in my 22/45 Lite with the VQ versions. The stock hammer bushing and LCI were replaced with TandemKross parts. I also installed the Majestic Arms Speed Strip Kit.

It is a different gun: much better trigger with its adjusted take up and over travel, cleaner break due to the improved sear, more reliable because of the LCI replacement and, finally, easier and simpler cleaning with the older hammer bushing and the Speed Strip Kit.

The sear replacement will give you the most bang for the buck. But replacing the trigger will allow you to tune its operation to your preferences.

Get what you want and can afford now. You can always get the others later on.
