Which would you pick and why?

to me it seems that they are almost the same gun still, the main difference is the handle, is the 1911 styled handle more comfortable than a traditional mark iv?

I have a Ruger Standard Model (1958) and a new Ruger MkIV 22/45.

I shoot them equally well, but they do have different personalities. Maybe you should try out an example of each, but from my perspective it would be hard to choose one from the other.

They very much are almost the same gun. The grip is the difference.
It comes down to taste, but mine is for practice and every other gun I've got has the modern 1911-ish grip angle. My 22/45 facilitates that.
It's more comfortable for me, yes, and the 1911-style handle tends to lend itself better to the two-handed grips and 'combat stances': two hands on the grip, facing forward.
The more angled Luger-style grip may or may not feel better in your hands no matter the stance, but it's vastly different than moden defensive handguns. It works better, in my case, for what I was taught as the 'target stance': one-handed, standing sidelong to the target.

That's a personal preference. I much prefer the 1911 angle, but other people much prefer the other.

I like my MkII, but strongly prefer the American/1911 grip angle on center-fire autos.

In my opinion, the .22 pistol should feel a different, and the steep grip angle isn't an issue with the non-existent recoil of the .22.

I'm not a fan of the polymer lower on the 22/45 so the decision was easy for me.....a Browning Buckmark.

Since then I've picked up a Mark I and actually do like the steep grip angle of the Mark series so I'd have no problem getting a Mark IV. But I still don't like that ugly cheap-feeling lower on the 22/45!

If you have other guns that you shoot well I would get the Ruger model that has a grip angle similar to what you already own. I own both in the MKIII version and my 22/45 has an alloy Volquartsen lower as I prefer it to the polymer frame that comes stock. Both are excellent choices and you really can't go wrong with either.
