Ruger Mini-14 or Mini Thirty?

OP did mention he had considered an AR. My post suggested he should reconsider one since Minis are typically harder on scopes and not as accurate. Also as stated 223 is less than desireable over .30 on deer.

I have a Mini Tactical that occasionally accompanies when I go shooting but always takes a back seat to my AR'. I just bought a Ruger American Ranch 300 Blackout that puts my "shoot em' up" grade ammo with pulled GI bullets into
1 1/4" groups and 125 gr about the same. Neat short rifle with just enough weight to hold the shots steady if a second or third is needed.
So if a Mini was desired I would go with the 300 Tactical, but a better hunter would be the American Ranch in Blackout and scope it with a decent 3-7 model.

Skip the Mini-junk. :barf:

For hunting use on deer, hogs, et. al, get an AR in .300BLK, ... or just get the .300 upper if you already have a 5.56 AR. It will prove to be a much more reliable and accurate weapon.

You can thank me later.

Jim, i believe he has that statement indwelled on his forehead as everything not on his list he labeles "junk". My Mini as i indicated is not on the top of my list of all time greats but it is a neat looking rifle that shoots holes in bean cans and dirt clods just fine and certainly not "junk". I try to maintain a positive approach on the forums ( well except when talking about Hi Points:banghead:) as most posters have a legitimate problem and are seeking constructive help "skip the mini-junk" offers nothing other than the narrow vision of the poster.

In favor of the Mini-14
Readily available; not terribly expensive; inexpensive ammo
Against
Magazines are a PITA; potential non-hunting caliber; all the yahoos saying "Ya shuda gat an AR"

The Mini thirty in one of its iterations is probably the winner of the two. 7.62x39 is very much like the .30-30; the Blackout better, but not quite as available.

Dudenal, those semi-literate words were so harsh.

Did mommy not give you oatmeal this morning? Hmmmm?

A Mini-30 in 7.62x39 would be a fast handling deer rifle. In my neck of the woods, 100 yards is a long shot (in most areas), well within the effective range of the rifle/cartridge combo. There is a good (but not great)selection of quality ammo suitable for hunting and the Mini is easily scoped. Within it's range the Mini-30 has a lot going for it.

As between the 7.62 x 39 and the .223, if deer are on your menu you are more sensibly armed with the 7.62. It is broadly comparable to the .30-30 and we already know that works on deer. Someone said, above, that .223 isn't permissible for deer where you are; if that is so, don't trust the game warden's sense of humor. He isn't going to see it as an antlered rabbit.

As between the AR-15 and the Mini, I much prefer the layout of the Mini's operating controls. The charging handle is directly connected to the rifle's guts and serves at need as a forward assist. The safety is in the ideal place for fast operation. Only the Glock has a safety that is easier to work in a hurry. ;)
