Ruger Mini-14 -- where to get 20 round mags?

Anybody using 20 round mags in their minis? What brands work well? Where can I get some?

Which brands should I avoid?

Didn't know they made 20s for the Mini. I guess you learn something new every day.

I have a pre-ban (used) Mini. The only high caps that I will use are Ruger factory (hard to find and expensive) or PMI (Precision Manufacturing Inc). PMI mags were easy to find but now they are out of business.

I have five 30-rd PMI mags for my Mini and they work great. I got them during the ban (at the princely sum of $10/mag, shipped NIW) but you can still find them at gunshows and other places for $30 or so per mag.

Ruger factory high-caps are getting easier to find, since the ban expired. No thanks to Ruger (who continues to restrict availability of high-cap mags and the factory folding stock to civvies). It used to be that Ruger factory mags would go for $80-100/mag during the ban. Now you can find factory Ruger high-caps for much less -- if you are willing to put up with the "LEO ONLY" stamp on the side of the mags.

Avoid USA mags. Unless you wanna do what I did to mine, I rebuilt them using Ar15 springs and green followers. I had to modify them slightly with my die grinder to fit in the magazines. I also lose the bolt hold open when empty, but it was worth it to get reliable magazines from that junk.

Cheaper than Dirt has Ruger factory 20 round mags for $25 now. That is as cheap as I have seen them in 20 years. I bought a dozen the other day.

Buy the Ruger factory 20 rounders. They're getting more common now and they cost like $30. Ruger is now making them again but not selling them directly to civilians. It is however legal for civilians to own them.

I guess the factory mags I have must have been produced before the ban because they do not have the LEO ONLY stamp.

Look around on the Net until you find genuine Ruger factory 20rd mags. They'll be marked LEO ONLY because Ruger refuses to sell high cap mags to the public. They're very expensive, but they're the only ones guaranteed to work. They're worth the extra money.

Just recently test fired 2 Ruger 20 rounders, and performance was 100%.

I have some of the old Federal Ordnance 30 rounders, and they are good too.

Ruger management has recently changed, and it remains to be seen what their new policy will be.

Rumors are flying, but only time will tell.

I have 1 USA 20 rd mag it's a POS and 1 USA 30 rd mag that has never failed me. I guess they get right once in a while.

Fed Ord and PMI are the same, just different names. They are as good as Ruger factory mags IMO.

Ruger mags of course work fine.

USA mags are junk. Avoid.

Triple-K are mostly junk.

Unmarked no-name mags may or may not be junk but you won't know until you try each one.

Said magazines shipped on Tuesday, just as Cheaper Than Dirt said they would. Arrived a few days later. They are, in fact, new factory mags and work just fine.

Yes.

I've had no problem with Promag plastic 20 round magazines.

Pretty much anywhere.

None of the 20 round USA or Cabela's mags I've had have worked well. I was reluctant to try Triple K based on previous reputation for being POS, but tried a friend's. I now have some of my own that have so far been flawless. A couple of guys in the gun library at Cabela's recommended Mec-Gar, but I haven't found any for calibers other than .22 and 9mm.

My best mag is a stainless no-name. I got it at a show and the vendor hasn't been back. I wish I had a clue what the mag is, because I'd buy a bag of 'em.

The plastic Eagles work well, though one of mine had an iffy holdopen. I have no idea how long plastic feed lips last, though.
