I have the Ruger Mk IV Hunter model. I am considering a red dot sight for it. Friend of mine has the Vortex Venom 3MOA. I don't remember how he exactly mounted it on the pistol. I would prefer a minimalist approach which would not include a rail. Any recommendations? What red dot did you choose and why? Please share a picture of your Ruger MK pistol if possible. What mount did you use? IMG_4080.JPG

Yes, I replaced the rear sight with the Burris mount made specifically for the MK pistols. It doesnt screw to the gun, but it does have screws. When you put the sight on the mount, you use screws. They pull the mount upwards and hold it tight against the guns dovetail.

You think yours is as low as this one? Not sure it's worth $65 just for the mount. I am told lower is better, but is there a point of no benefit for any lower?

I am thinking the red dot will be the Vortex Venom 3moa. Any criticism ??
I have one on my Volqs/TacSol/Ruger 22/45 and it's fantastic. Vortex has a great military pricing program if you can take advantage of it.

This one is of course done with the Rail Ruger includes but it's very cheap for those who don't want to spend much. I bought a few of the quick mounts off Amazon. They run about $10. I bought one first, not really expecting much from it for that cost. Found I could move the sight from pistol to pistol and onto a couple of my PCC's and damned if it does not hold zero most of the time. So this way I can shoot with the dot and pop it on and off to get some time with the irons too. Ended up buying a few of the quick mounts. The dot is just a very low end Bushnell, run less than $50 on Amazon. They too seem to hold up fine even when used on some PCC's in 45 and 10mm. For the price I was real happy. Raildot.png

I'm a Burris FF III fan for my .22s. I don't if you can mount a rail on th Hunter Model buts it's what I did on th 22/45. That way the iron sights are still ther in case of failure of the red dot.

That is the mount I used and I am very happy with it. I chose the Holosun HE407C-GR over the Vortex because of the torture tests by Sage Dynamics on you tube.

IMHO lower is better only if you want to be able to use the iron sights through the red dot.

This "co-witness" is nice in theory and does help when initially zeroing the red dot, but IMHO in the long run its counter productive as irons and dots are different so that having them both at the same time can be confusing -- with irons you focus on the front sight, with dots you look thru the dot and focus on the target, if you focus on the dot you'll swear the "darn thing doesn't hold zero".

A couple of my early red dots were co-witness setups, and I quickly concluded it was not worth the trouble and expense. A nice co-witness setup is the SIG P320 with factory red dot, I have one and the only time I use the irons is to help shooters new to red dots learn how to acquire the dot since its right there if they use the irons.

Thanks for all the replies. I went minimalist as I could find available. Burris mount with the Vortex Venom sight. That and my MKIV has the Volquartsen trigger kit in it with a short crisp 2lb pull. I know it was very repeatably accurate with the open sights. I hope it is the same with the red dot. What do you think?

I like your setup.
Muuuch more aesthetic than mine for sure.

The holster in my pic above is by "Black Dog" holsters. It is a great holster with a cut-out for optics. I'm not sure how it would effect that nice stainless finish though?

I bet your accuracy will be superb.
My old stock MKll with cheap red dot will do this at 15yds, off a rest with cheap Federal ammo:
