I just bought a Ruger 22/45 to replace my P22. After cleaning it up, I took it to the range only to experience MANY failure-to-fires:(. It was very accurate when it would shoot, which was not often. It seem that the rounds are jammed into the bottom of the feed ramp, and that stops the slide. If anyone else has had this problem, what did you do to fix it? I am really disappointed in this thing. My P22 was less accurate, but at least it would fire:mad: Really hate the thought of sending a gun that I have owned less than 12 hours back to the factory. HELP!!! Did the same thing with both mags

Following up on Runningman's question, we had similar problems with my daughters at first. After experimenting it runs fine with High Velocity CCI Mini Mags or Remington Golden Bullet. The latter being significantly cheaper at $16 per 550 versus $7 per 100 for the Mini Mags. I get an occaisional "dud" with the Remington both feed and function fine in our 22/45.

I was using CCI mini mags federal bulk (brown box) American Eagele (I know, I know) really shocked me that it jammed with the CCIs If i tap the slide, it will actually shave the nose of the round.

Well since it is choking on CCI Mini Mags. I would send it back to Ruger. If a 22 semi auto won't run on CCI Mini Mags it has issues from my experience.

I think I'm going to cut my losses with this thing. I will NEVER EVER spend money on anything else with the ruger name!

It's like the frigging magazine sits too low. Ammo is at the wrong angle to feed:cuss:

I'd say to keep trying different ammo. I have the same pistol, and it works consistently with CCI mini-mag solids, but will quite frequently do what you've described with mini-mag hollow-points -- two or three times per magazine, and always with the first round out of the mag. Why? I sure can't figure it out.

BTW, mine won't hit anything. It doesn't group; it patterns, can't stay on a sheet of paper at 25 yds.

Did you completely strip, clean and lube your 22/45 before taking it to the range ? They are packed with preservative not lube. You need to really clean to remove the preservative and any debris prior to first use. I cleaned the mazagines as well.
I've never tried Mini-mags but have had good luck with Blazer, Wildcat, Lightening, and WMT Federal value pack ammo. Bulk Remington reportedly causes leading/fouling problems. My MKIII is reliable and I can routinely hit 6" steel plates [with Federal value pack ammo] at 50 yards so Ruger accuracy is definitely not an issue.
Spend some time and read up on the 22/45 at the guntalk-online.com Forum.

I have three Ruger MK II's and have had them for many years. Absolutely reliable and very accurate. Keep trying. Use a different magazine. CCI Minmags should work fine.

I have a Ruger Mark III Hunter that eats CCI Mini Mags with no problems. I had some problems with Winchester bulk ammo. See if you can find other brands of ammo and experiment a bit. BTW, my Ruger combined with an Ultradot scope is a tack driver.

Thanks for the advice guys. It WILL NOT run on CCI mini mags. After doing some thinking, It actually ran better on the cheapo American Eagle ammo. It was field stripped and cleaned before the range. I will try some of the solid round ammo instead of hollow points and see if runs any better. I have a Browning Nomad that I shot for the first time yesterday, that didn't give a hoot what I put in it. When it shoots, the 22/45 I have is probably THE most accurate .22 handgun I've ever shot.

I tried it again today. I used CCI round nose and Winchester Super X round nose. it ran a LOT better today than it did yesterday. Not a single problem with the Winchester, and 2 or 3 FTFs with the CCI. I fired 100 rounds of each and I know now it doesn't like hollow points

Don't Give Up

Hi

I had a similar situation with my Lorcil L 380.

Tried till I found ammo it likes WWB .380 FMJ

Got a new mag and adjusted the spring tension and now this Chrome Devil shoots flawlessly.

When you build a gazillion guns at a low price, you can do two things. Build them loose so they run out of the box, or build them tight and let the owner break them in.

Mark II's are in the latter category. Run a brick of ammo through the gun when it is lubed well (wet). Clean and then run as normal. You will have a tight gun that shoots great, is accurate and will be something you can give to your grandkids (if we're still allowed to have guns then...).

Several million happy owners can't all be wrong. ;)

To the OP. I know what the problem is and the solution so far is ONLY to use solid point ammo or the cheap fed red box stuff.

The problem is that 22 hollow point stuff has a flat point from the hole in the point of the round that hits the feed ramp dead on. The round then gets jammed in there. It appears that the mag sits too low like you stated.

But when I use solid point ammo (any), it runs perfectly. The only hollow points I found that it runs perfect with are the cheap 13.97 wally world 550 bulk pack of Federal in the red box. They have a very pointed hollow point, much more so than the expensive stuff. Because they are so pointed, they don't hit the feed ramp edge and jam.

It sounds like your gun is like mine and that is the solution, different ammo and you just have to accept that its not going to run with the majority of hollowpoints.

Do I like it, not really but I accepted it and now have a gun that runs pretty much flawlessly so I'm now satisfied.

Unless you can figure out a way of getting the feed ramp lowered a tiny bit, it will always do what you were describing, I know it happens with my gun.

bobotech,
As much as I hate it, I believe you're right:( It's hard not to be disappointed with this purchase, The much maligned P22 I had ran great. I almost regret not buying another one. :banghead:

I'm gonna disagree... I broke mine in on cheap solid point, but now I'm hard pressed to find anything it won't run... including hollowpoints. Get to 500+ rounds and you should be good to go. I'd venture to guess that mine's somewhere well over 20k rounds. I wouldn't have made it that far if it didn't feed reliably.

Ridiculous. My 22/45 shoots anything and everything, hollow points, cheap bulk, Stingers, match ammo. Anything. True, its a MK II, but the MK III's are mainly reliable guns too. If you don't want to do the mods or have someone else do the mods, send it back to Ruger.

Remember for every guy that complains on the internet, thousands are shooting the exact same model Ruger reliably and accurately.

Pilot,
I don't know what mods you're talking about that Ruger is willing to do. The friend that recommended the gun to me, has performed the magazine mod. Using his magazine I still had problems using hollow point ammo. I'm not trying to be a smarty pants;), but I'm really not too concerned about the thousands of guys that have reliable Ruger 22/45s ,because I'm the one guy with the lemon. If Ruger does any modding other than the magazine, please let me know (I'm being serious), and I'll get it shipped out. I don't doubt yours shoots any ammo, my buddy's will too. Mine won't. It does work better with round nose ammo though.

p.s. I forgot, I did the LCI mod too.

So, by my math and the time of this post, the gun is less than 60 hours old (to you) and you're ready to give up? More rounds downrange, clean it up, more rounds, clean it up again. Give it a chance to break in.

gator,

As the others have said, keep shooting Minimags through it until it breaks in. If it still doesn't work, send it back to Ruger to turn your lemon into lemonade. They won't do any mods per se, just make it work like it should.

For the record, I think Ruger really screwed the pooch going from the MK II to the MK III. The gun took a step backwards, however, it should still work.

Floppy D and Pilot,
You're both right. It is less than 60 hours old (ok, ok , my patience is not what it should be:eek:) I feel a lot better about it now that it will at least run on round nose ammo. Good heavens this thing is accurate!! The p22 can't hold a candle to the accuracy of this Ruger. That's even with the 4 inch barrel
