I just picked up my first .22LR pistol today. I got a Ruger MKIII Target. I got home with it and put two mags through it and had 3 FTE. Is this a common thing when these guns are new? Is it just part of the break in period, if they have one? Could it be the ammo? I was shooting Remington Golden Bullet bonus pack, about 4 years old. I am going to try some different ammo the next chance I get to see if it helps. I am not ready to give up on the gun by any means. My dad had a MKII about ten years ago and it was a great gun. I can handle the FTE's at the range but I was hoping to do some small game hunting with it and they could cause a problem then. Thanks for any help.

I just bought one about two weeks ago and I did not have any problems I shot about 300rds of the 550 bulk pack federals and about 50rds of cci stingers (which i dont recomend as they are harder on the gun) put i would just let the gun break in that should help some, if not then maybe diffferent ammo. I did however have a fun afternoon trying to clean the little bugger but it shoots great so its worth the trouble

I've had the MkIII for several months now and enjoy shooting it. Try different ammo. You should stay away from standard velocity ammo as the pistol needs the extra power to cycle the bolt correctly. The pistol shouldn't require a "break-in" period, although your groups should tighten up after several hundred rounds.

Try using some other brand of ammo. Stay away from anything labeled Remington, these have a high failure rate and often contribute to heavy leading in the barrels of Ruger 22 autos.

Thanks Guys. I am going to try some new ammo next week. If that does not help, what should I do?

Great reliable pistols. I would first clean it, if that does not solve the issue then buy different ammo. CCI seems to be a decent cost effective ammo. Standard Velocity ammo should be fine in the Ruger.

Somewhere between 2000 and 3000 rounds, only 3 "hiccups" so far. Eats anything.

Best groups for the buck (in mine): Federal Gold Premium.
Best groups (too many bucks) (in mine): Lapua Midas M.
Best groups (too many bucks for everyday, but not insane): Eley Biathlon.

It cycles with anything over Colibris, seems to like fairly slow stuff at 50 feet.

Cleaning is not the reputed horror show. Heck, take the whole thing apart. Kill an afternoon!

My MKIII is fairly new as well. The first 100 rounds through my MKIII had 2 FTFs. The next 100 had 1. The next 600 had zero. Definitely a breaking-in thing.

Sounds like your bolt is gummed up......

with shipping lube. Clean it up and then shoot it. I have a Mk2 govt model that is my bullseye pistol and it shoots standard vel ammo all day long. I do have several FTF out of a box of Remington ammo on a regular basis.....chris3
