Ok ***??

I dont understand all of Ruger's model designations. I atually thought Glocks was ridiculous until I tried to research a Ruger 9mm.

Ok, I am mainly interested in what are the differences between the 9mm models, 89, 94 ad 93. I think the 93 is a compact version. that is about the only difference I can come up with.

I realize the 95 is polymer framed, I am leaving that model out of this discusion.

Thank you in advance.

Year!!

The number is designated by the year the pistol was designed. P85 was designed in 85, and released in 86, 89 was desinged in 89, and released about a year later, and so on. Don't think number vs caliber, think number vs. year. :D

P89 - Improved version of P85 Mk II, 9mm only, 4-7/16" bbl.
P94 - 4-3/16" bbl. (compact har har), available in 9mm and .40s&w as P944.
P90 - .45acp version of P89.
P91 - 40s&w version of P89 (discontinued??)

Apologies if I'm wrong, try the Ruger website for a full description of all their firearms. Basically they have a few frames, a few calibers. The other designations indicate Hogue grips and stainless vs. blue configurations.

I have the P944 and P89. Both are fun guns for the home, target shooting, glove box, etc. Some LE use the P90. Large for some hands though, and almost no accessories even though its sold millions of these P-series. It would be a stretch to call these concealable handguns.

Cost is low, $350-$400 new in box retail and reliability is very high. I have not had one failure on the P944 in 3,000 range rounds, not a feed, extraction or fire problem, including +P ammo, Wolf, WWB, reloads, etc. Field strip = 5 seconds or less, no tools. Xtra mags run $20-$29.

Ruger customer service on the P-series is excellent+, try the rugerforum at www.rugerforum.net and here for some reviews of their service.

If you do get one, get the hogue grips and leave the plastic factory grips at the store. If you feel even slightly discomfited by any aspect of the gun, give customer service a call, they will help you out.
